We’d barely got the satnav sorted before the heavens opened, and of course the boot decided to jam just as we reached the cottage gate. There we were, two grown adults wrestling a suitcase in sideways rain while a bag of still-warm pasties slowly soaked through on the back seat. Typical Devon welcome, I muttered, though the view that greeted us once we finally shouldered the door open made the damp scramble worthwhile.

Aylesbury Cottage sits just above Combe Martin’s sheltered beach, and in early October the little cove felt half-asleep. The tide was out, leaving a wide stretch of damp sand the colour of milky tea, and the row of pastel houses along the front looked softer in the low autumn light. We’d chosen this weekend on purpose—half-term crowds gone, but the weather still mild enough for a proper walk before the real winter set in—and the cottage seemed to know it.

Inside, the sitting room caught the last of the sun through its low windows, warming the slate hearth where someone had already laid a basket of driftwood. A faint smell of woodsmoke lingered from the previous guests, mixing with the salt that had followed us in on our coats. We kicked off wet shoes, made tea in mismatched mugs, and stood for a moment just watching the waves fold over themselves in that unhurried way they do when the season is turning.

Later we wandered down the lane to the beach café, still open for another fortnight, and shared chips from a polystyrene tray while seagulls wheeled hopefully overhead. The air had that clean, sharp edge you only notice once summer has packed up; jumpers suddenly felt like the right decision rather than an afterthought. Back at the cottage, the garden bench was slick with rain but the view across the bay was endless—grey-blue water, a lone fishing boat heading home, and the cliffs already tinged with the first rust of bracken.

I’d expected a holiday to be about doing things, yet the slower rhythm suited us better than any itinerary. We lit the fire, played a daft card game we’d found in a drawer, and talked about nothing much until the room grew properly dark. Outside, the occasional car hissed past on the wet road, but inside the cottage felt like its own small season—quiet, slightly musty, and oddly comforting. It struck me, while refilling the kettle for what must have been the sixth time, that sometimes the best part of getting away is simply noticing how ordinary things feel different when the crowds have gone and the light starts to change.
