About Devon
The barn itself looked exactly like the pictures: solid stone walls, a low slate roof, and a little wooden bench right outside the door catching the last of the light. We fumbled with the key safe for a minute—more proof that technology and I aren’t always on speaking terms—then stepped inside to the smell of woodsmoke and fresh linen. The living room was simple and welcoming, with squashy sofas that practically demanded you put your feet up, and a big window framing a slice of green field sloping down toward the sea. By the next morning the sun was properly out, and any plans we might have had about “getting out and doing things” quietly melted away. We dragged two garden chairs onto the little patio, made endless cups of tea, and watched the gulls wheel over the cliffs. The beach was only a short walk down a steep lane, so after lunch we wandered there with nothing but towels and a book each. The sand was warm underfoot, the waves were gentle enough for a paddle, and before long we were both stretched out on our backs doing precisely nothing. That became the pattern for the next few days. Mornings started late, with breakfast eaten outside while the kettle cooled on the little stove. Afternoons drifted between the cottage garden and the shoreline, where we collected a ridiculous number of shells we’d never actually do anything with. Evenings were for lighting the wood burner, even though it wasn’t really cold, and reading until our eyes got heavy. I kept telling myself we ought to drive somewhere or find a pub, but every time the thought surfaced it was easier to stay put. There’s something quietly ridiculous about how quickly two adults can become content with a patch of grass, a view of the sea, and the occasional seagull squabble. I’d come down with a vague idea of “making the most” of the holiday, yet here I was, perfectly happy watching clouds drift and listening to the odd car rumble past on the lane. Old Combe Barn didn’t push us to do anything more than slow down, and for once that felt like exactly enough. |
