About Devon
First impressions were all about the light. Sun bounced off the water and straight through the sitting-room windows, turning the sofa into the warmest seat in Devon. We dumped bags, kicked off shoes, and headed straight out with a map that promised cliff paths within minutes. The tide was out, so we picked our way across wet sand to the wooden steps that climb towards Bolt Head. Gulls wheeled above us, and every few yards the path opened onto another pocket of turquoise water that made us stop and say “just one more photo.” Halfway up, the sky decided it had other ideas. What had been a perfect twenty-two degrees turned into a brisk breeze carrying the sort of fine rain that soaks you without warning. We laughed, pulled hoods up, and kept going; there’s something oddly cheering about British weather when you’re already damp. By the time we reached the trig point the cloud had lifted again, leaving the whole estuary sparkling below us. We sat on the grass, ate slightly squashed pasties from the bakery in town, and watched a sailing boat tack lazily towards the bar. Back at the cottage the little patio felt like an extension of the beach. We rinsed sandy feet under the outdoor tap, then wandered down again for an evening stroll along North Sands. The light was soft and golden, the sort that makes even a five-minute walk feel like an occasion. We found a bench, watched a family skim stones, and realised we hadn’t checked our phones once since the tractor incident. Later, feet up on the window seat, I caught myself thinking how rarely we slow down like this. The day had started with a daft detour and a soggy scramble, yet everything that mattered—salt air, cliff views, easy laughter—had happened within a mile of the front door. Maybe that’s the real trick of a place like Sandhills: it doesn’t need grand plans, just the willingness to step outside and let the coast decide what happens next. |
