About Devon
Before we’d even unpacked the boot, a wiry chap in a flat cap appeared from the neighbouring field with a collie at his heels. “You the ones from up-country?” he asked, as though we’d driven from another planet rather than just down the A39. I admitted we were, and he introduced himself as Trevor, the chap who keeps an eye on the place when the owners are away. Within minutes he was pointing out which tap in the kitchen gives the best pressure and warning us that the seagulls had worked out how to open the wheelie bin. I thanked him and asked about the quickest way down to the beach path; he chuckled and said, “Follow the smell of vinegar—that’ll be Bob’s chippy van on the seafront. Tell him I sent you and he might throw in an extra pickled egg.” We wandered into the village later to stretch our legs, and the first person we met was Margaret, who runs the little post-office-cum-shop. She asked where we were staying, then nodded knowingly. “That’s the old Bartlett place, isn’t it? Trevor’ll have given you the full tour already.” When I mentioned the sat-nav mishap she laughed so loudly the bell above the door tinkled. “Happens to everyone. Last week a couple from Bristol ended up in a lay-by with their caravan wedged between two hedges.” Margaret then spent ten minutes giving us the low-down on which tide times were best for rock-pooling and which pub landlord poured the flattest pint if we fancied a pint later. Back at the cottage that evening, sitting on the low wall with mugs of tea, I found myself thinking how odd it was that a wrong turn and a nosy neighbour had already told us more about the place than any guidebook could. Trevor popped by again with a handful of early rhubarb “for a crumble,” and we chatted about the changes in Combe Martin over the years—the new surf school on the beach, the fact the chippy van now takes card. It struck me that the real welcome wasn’t the cottage itself, pretty as it was, but the way these small conversations folded us into the rhythm of the village before we’d even unpacked our wellies. |
