Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Devon after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some classic Fleetwood Mac, but about halfway through, disaster struck – a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with my car on one of those narrow lanes near Totnes. Heart in my mouth, I slammed on the brakes, and there it was, staring me down like it owned the road. No harm done, but it certainly added a bit of drama to the journey. Still, as I wound my way into the South Hams, the anticipation built – those rolling hills, the promise of sea air, and a proper break from the daily grind.

Pulling up to the farmhouse just outside Beesands, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those classic Devon holiday lets, all cosy and welcoming with a lived-in charm that screams 'kick off your shoes and stay a while'. The first impressions were spot on: the garden stretched out like a green embrace, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and that faint salty whiff from Start Bay reminding you the coast is just a gentle stroll away.

From the off, I knew this was going to be all about doing bugger all – and I mean that in the best possible way. No grand plans, no ticking off bucket lists. Just lazy cottage days that melted into one another. Mornings started late, with a cuppa on the patio watching the mist lift over the fields. The garden became my kingdom: a hammock slung between the trees for mid-morning dozes, or sprawling on a blanket with a dog-eared copy of some crime thriller I'd been meaning to read for months. Beesands beach is literally minutes away – a shingle affair with waves that crash just right for a bit of idle paddling if the mood took me – but mostly, I stayed put, savouring the slow rhythm of nothing much.

Afternoons? More of the same, blissfully. I'd potter about the garden paths, picking a few herbs for a simple lunch – nothing fancy, just cheese on toast with a side of fresh air. One day, I even managed a whole chapter without nodding off, which felt like a personal victory. The joy of it all was switching off that inner voice nagging about emails and to-do lists. Lying there, book forgotten in my lap, listening to the buzz of bees and distant gulls, I had this gentle moment of self-reflection: when did I last let myself just *be*? Life back home is all rush and hustle, but here, time stretched out like toffee. It was humbling, really – a reminder that the best holidays aren't about doing, but undoing all that tension.

Evenings wrapped up with the sunset painting the sky over the bay, a glass of wine in hand, maybe a neighbourly chat over the fence if anyone popped by. No need for telly or takeaways; the quiet was the entertainment. A tiny mishap with the wonky garden gate pinching my thumb only made me chuckle – par for the course on a proper English break. Leaving felt bittersweet, but I've already pencilled in a return. Devon, you've got me hooked on the art of sweet faff-all.
