Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to North Devon – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a comedy of errors thanks to SatNav’s sudden rebellion. Picture this: me, white-knuckling the wheel as it cheerily directed us onto a narrow lane that narrowed further into something resembling a goat track. “Recalculating,” it chirped, just as we scraped past a hedge that definitely won that round. By the time we spotted the resort near Combe Martin, I was sweating more than if I’d run a marathon, and my other half was shooting me that “why didn’t we take the train?” look. Still, as we finally pulled up, the sea air hit us like a welcome slap, carrying hints of salt and freedom. Anticipation bubbled up – after all that faff, this had better be worth it.

Stepping out, the first impressions were pure magic. There it was, this charming little retreat tucked into the exclusive resort, all stylish and inviting without a hint of pretension. We’d booked it sight unseen, but from the off, it felt like home – or the posh version we all dream of. The open-plan living space inside was a dream: a well-equipped kitchen begging for a cuppa, cosy dining spot, and squashy seating perfect for flopping. Upstairs, the master bedroom’s four-poster king-size bed screamed luxury (I may have done a little bounce test), and the family bathroom with its bath and overhead shower promised long soaks after days out.

But the real showstopper? That private enclosed terrace. Overlooking the resort’s animal enclosures and lush valley, it had a bubbling hot tub, comfy garden furniture, a barbecue, and a chimenea for toasty evenings. We cracked open a bottle of fizz right there, watching deer wander by as the sun dipped towards the coast. First impressions? Blown away. The mishaps melted into giggles – who needs perfect navigation when you’ve got this?

We wasted no time diving into local gems. A short stroll took us to Combe Martin’s beach, where we paddled in the chilly waves and built wonky sandcastles like daft kids. Packhorse trails nearby offered gentle hikes with valley views that stopped you in your tracks – proper breathtaking stuff. Evenings meant firing up the barbie, bubbles in the hot tub, and spotting badgers at dusk from the terrace. One night, I caught myself staring out, pint in hand, thinking, “Blimey, when did life get this good?” It’s those quiet moments of reflection that hit hardest – amid the holiday whirl, realising you’ve needed this reset more than you knew.

Sure, the arrival was chaos – SatNav 0, us 1 in the end – but it made the whole stay sweeter. North Devon’s got that unspoiled charm, and this spot nailed the cosy seaside escape. If you’re after a proper unwind without the hassle, it’s a belter. We left buzzing, already plotting a return. Cheers to messy journeys and perfect landings!
