Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Pulling up to the cottage, we were gobsmacked. It’s one of those proper stone-built farmhouses, all wonky charm with roses scrambling up the walls and a garden that screamed “kick off your shoes.” First impressions? Pure magic. We tumbled out, bags everywhere, and the kids immediately dashed to the paddock next door to coo over the Dartmoor ponies grazing there. Inside, it was all low ceilings, squishy sofas, and that faint wood-burner smell that says “relax.” We dumped our stuff and cracked open a bottle of local Tavistock cider – cheers to no more wrong turns! The next few days blurred into proper cottage bliss, the kind of holiday where chaos meets calm. Mornings started with brekkie chaos: Sarah flipping pancakes while I burned the bacon, the nephews turning the kitchen into a flour bomb site. But oh, those simple joys – fresh eggs from the honesty box down the lane, slathered on toast with a cuppa, overlooking the rolling fields. We wandered the easy paths around nearby Lumburn, spotting buzzards wheeling overhead and wildflowers everywhere. One afternoon, we packed a picnic and headed to the River Tavy, just a short stroll away – paddling in the shallows, skipping stones, the water icy but brilliant. The kids built dams while we lounged on the bank, pretending we were explorers. Pure, unfiltered family time. Evenings were for firing up the log burner and playing board games till late, with takeaways from the chippy in town – mushy peas and all. There was that hilarious moment when the nephews “helped” with dinner, turning pasta sauce into a Jackson Pollock painting, and I ended up scrubbing the hob till midnight. Laughing about it now, but it made me reflect: in our mad London rush, we forget these pockets of nothing-much. No schedules, no screens (well, mostly), just us lot bickering and bonding over silly things. Sarah caught me staring out the window one dusk, misty moors fading to pink, and said, “This is what holidays are for, innit?” Spot on. We left with muddy boots, fuller hearts, and a promise to return. Devon’s got that pull – especially a spot like this, where cottage life’s glorious mess reminds you what matters. If you’re after a chilled family break, pack your wellies and go. You won’t regret it. |
