About The Bickleigh.

Tiverton, Mid Devon's largest town, boasts a romantic castle and horse-drawn barge trips on the Grand Western Canal. Straddling the Exe and Lowman rivers, it prospered as a textile hub with fine buildings like the Jacobean Great House of St George, three mediaeval almshouses, and St Peter's parish church with its billowing sails frieze. R.D. Blackmore featured Old Blundell's in Lorna Doone. Henry I built Tiverton Castle in 1106. The Museum of Mid Devon Life has 14 galleries, including the GWR locomotive Tivvy Bumper.

Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that little spot near Tiverton in Devon – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some winding lane that felt more like a sheep track than a road. We ended up in a muddy layby, arguing over whether to trust the phone or my questionable sense of direction, while the heavens opened and rain hammered the windscreen. By the time we spotted the turning for Cadeleigh, we were both soaked from a dash to check a map under a flimsy brolly, and I’d somehow managed to spill my thermos of tea all over the passenger footwell. Typical me, turning a simple road trip into an episode of some daft sitcom.

But oh, pulling up to the place? That made it all worthwhile. Tucked away in this secluded nook just a few miles from Tiverton, it’s a proper contemporary detached lodge, all sleek lines and cosy vibes, perfect for just the two of us. The off-road parking was a godsend after our muddy detour – no scraping the bumper on a verge this time. Stepping out, the anticipation hit me like a warm hug; those rolling Devon countryside views stretched out ahead, misty hills dotted with sheep, and not a soul in sight. It felt like the outside world had packed its bags and left us to it. We were buzzing, exchanging grins like kids on Christmas morning, even as I slipped a bit on the wet gravel – minor mishap number three, but who cares?

Inside, it was even better than the photos promised. This romantic little studio-style setup welcomed us with stylish décor that’s effortlessly chic – think soft neutrals, plush throws, and underfloor heating that wrapped around our chilly toes like a dream. We dumped the bags and beelined for the kitchen, well-equipped enough to whip up a cheeky pasta while my other half faffed about setting the table for two. First impressions? Spot on. That private patio out back, with its wood-fired hot tub steaming gently in the drizzle, had us plotting an evening soak before we’d even unpacked properly.

We didn’t waste time – a quick splash in the tub under the stars (rain holding off, miracle!), then a gentle wander along nearby lanes the next morning. Cadeleigh’s got that peaceful rural charm, with footpaths leading to babbling brooks and wildflower meadows, all within easy reach. Popped into Tiverton later for a butcher’s at the market – fresh pasties and local cheeses that hit the spot. Reflecting on it now, that chaotic arrival was a blessing in disguise; it stripped away the city stress and reminded me how daft it is to sweat the small stuff. Us city escapees need places like this – secluded, serene, and just romantic enough to make you feel alive again. If you’re after a proper unwind, this Devon gem’s got my heart. Can’t wait to go back.
