Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Braunton – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some narrow Devon lanes that had hedges scraping the sides of the car like it was auditioning for a horror film. Then, just as we were nearly there, one of the kids knocked over a full flask of tea in the footwell, leaving us all slipping about like we were on ice skates. By the time we pulled up, I was frazzled, covered in splashes, and swearing under my breath that next time we’re taking the train.

But honestly, stepping through that gate? Pure magic. The place is this grand detached cottage, right in the heart of Braunton village, surrounded by that lush North Devon scenery that makes you go “wow” even if you’re knackered from the road. It’s got this welcoming vibe, like it’s been waiting just for us – perfect for our big family rabble, with six bedrooms to spread out in and no one stepping on toes. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and made a beeline for the breakfast kitchen, which is an absolute dream. Two ovens, loads of hobs, a coffee maker that’s basically a lifeline – we rustled up a massive brunch spread of bacon butties, scrambled eggs, and fresh scones while lounging on the sofa watching telly. The patio doors flung open to this cracking outdoor area with picnic benches, and I could already picture lazy afternoons there.

The anticipation had been building all week – emails back and forth about who was bringing what, daydreams of proper family time away from the daily grind. And it delivered straight away. Kids vanished into the games room for a darts tournament (my other half got thrashed, which was hilarious), while we adults cracked open a few tins and soaked in the view. Braunton’s got that easy charm – a quick wander to the village shop for milk and papers, or a stroll towards the Burrows, that massive nature reserve on the doorstep with dunes and beaches begging to be explored. We even nipped over to Saunton Sands later that afternoon, just a short drive away, for a paddle in the sea and some fish and chips from the beach kiosk. Blimey, the air tasted salty and free.

Looking back, that chaotic arrival was a blessing in disguise. It shook off the stresses of home life, and within minutes, we were laughing about the tea disaster over brekkie. There’s something about a place like this that pulls you together – no fancy bells and whistles needed, just space to breathe, eat, and reconnect. I caught myself mid-chuckling at the kids’ antics, thinking how rare it is to feel this content. If you’re after a base for a big get-together in proper scenic splendour, you won’t go far wrong here. We’re already plotting the return trip.
