About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the Midlands turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, rerouting us down some winding B-road that felt like it hadn’t seen tarmac since the war. Then, just as we hit the outskirts, a rogue seagull dive-bombed the windscreen, leaving us splattered and laughing hysterically while I fumbled for the screenwash. By the time we rolled into town, I was knackered, starving, and questioning my life choices as a holiday planner.

But oh, pulling up to this little 1-bed apartment overlooking Weymouth’s picturesque harbour? Instant mood-lifter. There it was, perched just right, with the sea sparkling below and the gentle clink of yacht masts in the breeze. We’d been buzzing with anticipation on the approach – imagining lazy afternoons by the water – and it didn’t disappoint. The first impressions were spot on: cosy inside, with everything you need for a chilled-out seaside escape, and that view from the window had us grinning like kids at Christmas. You could see the fishing boats bobbing about, the harbour buzzing with life, and Chesil Beach stretching out like a sandy promise in the distance.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out for a wander along the esplanade – couldn’t resist. The sea air hit you like a tonic, all salty and invigorating, with families paddling on the award-winning beach right there on the doorstep. Grabbed fish and chips from a shack (proper proper ones, wrapped in paper, none of your fancy nonsense), and plonked ourselves on a bench watching the world go by. Kids building sandcastles, dogs chasing waves – pure Dorset magic. I caught myself thinking, ‘Blimey, when did I last switch off like this?’ Work’s been a right grind lately, and here I was, feet up, letting the rhythm of the tides wash it all away. A gentle nudge from the missus reminded me holidays are for that – no deep soul-searching, just being.

Next morning, we nipped over to Portland, just three miles down the road – easy peasy on the bus. Walked the cliffs, gawped at Portland Bill lighthouse standing sentinel against the waves, and felt properly small in the best way. Back in Weymouth, the cafes along the harbour were calling: flat white and a scone that melted in your gob. Evenings were for ambling the shore, spotting seals (or was that wishful thinking?), and toasting the sunset with a pint from a quayside pub.

That messy arrival? Best mishap ever – made the whole stay feel earned, you know? Weymouth’s got that unpretentious charm, and this spot nailed the relaxing vibe. If you’re after sea views, sand under your toes, and zero faff, it’s a winner. Can’t wait to go back.
