Guarding the principal route through the Purbeck Hills, the 1000-year-old Corfe Castle’s dramatic remains stand in an elevated position as a representation of its colourful and significant history. The tumbledown, moss-embellished walls and rugged beauty conceal its diverse and often turbulent past.

About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Swanage – our sat-nav decided to play silly buggers just outside Poole, sending us on a detour through some winding lanes that had me gripping the wheel like it was a lifeline. The kids in the back were chanting “Are we there yet?” on loop, and I was half-convinced we’d end up in the middle of a field. But then, as we crested that final hill, the Jurassic Coast unfolded below us, all shimmering sea and chalky cliffs, and suddenly the mishap felt like part of the adventure. My heart lifted; this was going to be proper family time.

Pulling up to the place, we were gobsmacked. It’s a swish new two-bedroom ground-floor apartment, just a hop, skip and jump from the beach and town centre. The patio out back sealed the deal – a cracking spot with a table and chairs, perfect for lazy evenings watching the sun dip into the bay. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a round of teas, already buzzing with that holiday buzz.

Settling in was pure cottage life chaos, the good kind. The little ones claimed the second bedroom faster than you could say “seaside rock,” turning it into a den of pillows and beach towels before we’d even unpacked. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the patio – toast slathered in marmalade, the air thick with salt and seagull chatter. We’d wander down to the beach, buckets in hand, building wonky sandcastles that inevitably got flattened by the tide. One afternoon, I tried my hand at a moat worthy of the Tower of London; it collapsed spectacularly, leaving us in fits. “Dad’s not cut out for civil engineering,” my wife quipped, and she wasn’t wrong.

Swanage itself is a gem for a relaxed break. We ambled along the pier, fishing for mackerel (caught three between us, which felt like a triumph), then treated ourselves to fish and chips from the town’s no-nonsense chippie – vinegar dripping, wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench overlooking the waves. Evenings were for gentle strolls to the high street; the kids eyed up the fudge shop while we nipped into a cosy café for cream teas. No grand plans, just those simple pleasures: paddling in rock pools at low tide, spotting fossils on the beach (we found a devil’s toenail – proper treasure), and collapsing into bed knackered but grinning.

There was a quiet moment one evening, sat on that patio as the sky turned pink, kids finally conked out inside. I caught myself thinking how these scrappy, sand-filled days are what recharge the batteries. Work stress? Miles away. It’s the chaos – the lost flip-flops, the overzealous sandcastle demos – that makes family holidays magic. We left with sun-kissed noses and a promise to return. Dorset’s got that pull; simple, unpretentious bliss.
