About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Swanage last autumn – the leaves were just starting to turn that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the A35 like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the family piled into the car from Bristol, kids buzzing in the back with crisps and iPads, but about halfway through, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided to play chicken with our windscreen. Thump! Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and the littlest one wailing like it was the end of the world. Pulled over near Corfe Castle, gave the bird a silent salute (it was fine, just stunned), and carried on, laughing about it later over cups of tea. That little mishap actually set the tone – a proper reminder that autumn in Dorset keeps you on your toes.

By the time we rolled up to our holiday spot in the late afternoon, the anticipation was electric. The sun was dipping low, painting the sea in shades of amber, and there it was: a lovingly refurbished first and second floor apartment in a Georgian period house built in 1832, right in the heart of things with stunning sea views over Durlston Country Park and Swanage Pier. First impressions? Blown away. Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug – all cosy and inviting, with those three generous bedrooms and beautifully finished bathrooms (two en-suites, thank goodness for mornings with three excited kids). The views from the windows alone were worth the drive; you could watch the waves crashing on the shore below, with the park’s cliffs glowing in the harvest light.

Autumn shaped every bit of our stay, turning what could’ve been a standard seaside jaunt into something magical. Mornings started with mist rolling in from the Channel, perfect for wrapping up in scarves and heading out to Durlston. We crunched through fallen leaves on the trails, spotting fossil hunters poking about the cliffs – the season’s cooler air made those walks crisp and invigorating, not the sweaty slog of summer. Picnics by the sea with thermos flasks of soup, watching seals bob in the bay, their sleek backs catching the weak sun. One day, we wandered down to Swanage Beach, the sand cool underfoot and scattered with seaweed from recent storms. Built a massive sandcastle, only for the tide to nibble at it gently – taught the kids a thing or two about impermanence, didn’t it?

Evenings were pure bliss. We’d fire up the oven for roast dinners (that sea view making everything taste better), then stroll along the pier as the sky bruised purple and orange. The air had that fresh, salty tang, laced with woodsmoke from beachside fires – no crowds, just locals walking dogs and the odd family like ours, savouring the quiet. One night, we caught the tail end of a folk festival in town; fiddles and accordions spilling out from a pub, with mulled cider warming our hands. Hilarious moment: I tried dancing with the youngest on the promenade, slipped on wet leaves, and ended up in a heap – family photos for life!

Looking back, that pheasant flap forced a bit of self-reflection. I’m usually the one stressing about plans, but Dorset’s autumn vibe – all mellow fruitfulness and unpredictable weather – showed me to loosen up. Rain one minute, rainbows the next; it mirrored life, really. We left refreshed, promising to return for more of that golden-season magic. If you’re after a proper Dorset escape, snag a spot like this in the autumn – it’s transformative.
