About Dorset
I finally made it to Weymouth after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. Picture this: I'm humming along the A35, windows down, dreaming of salty sea air, when—bam—a rogue seagull decides my windscreen needs a fresh coat of paint. Proper Jackson Pollock job. I pull over at the next services, scrubbing away with a pack of wet wipes, laughing at myself for not packing the full car valeting kit. Still, by early afternoon, the Jurassic Coast was unfolding before me, those chalky cliffs glowing in the sun, and my spirits lifted. Weymouth's harbour came into view, boats bobbing gently, and I couldn't wait to kick back.

Pulling up to this ground-floor apartment in a posh little development of just seven luxury flats, I had one of those "jackpot" moments. Perfect for me and the family—small but spot-on for discovering Weymouth without the hassle. Stepping inside, it was all spacious charm, with heaps of character that made it feel like a hug. The open-plan living area swept me up straight away: high-gloss kitchen begging for a lazy brew-up, dining spot right by this stunning bay window framing the garden views, and a plush lounge screaming "flop here forever." First impressions? Blimey, it was like the place knew I needed to switch off.

We'd booked it for a proper do-nothing holiday, and Dorset delivered in spades. No grand itineraries, just lazy cottage days stretching out like warm toffee. Mornings started slow: I'd potter into that gleaming kitchen, rustle up porridge or toast, then we'd shuffle out to the garden. It's a proper suntrap, that garden—lush grass, a few benches tucked under blooming shrubs, and not a soul to interrupt. I'd crack open a book (finally got stuck into that Richard Osman novel I'd been ignoring), while the kids sprawled on blankets, doodling or chasing butterflies. The sea's gentle whoosh from nearby Nothe Gardens filtered in, close enough to feel it but far enough not to demand a visit.

Afternoons blurred into siestas. We'd migrate back inside, lounge sprawled with cups of tea, maybe a family film on the telly—nothing too brainy, just pure escapism. Board games emerged once, but even that fizzled into giggles and "your turn later." Evenings? Dining table by the bay window, sharing a bottle of wine (or squash for the little ones), watching the light fade over the garden. One night, I caught myself staring out, realising how rare it is to just... be. No emails pinging, no rush. I'd been running on fumes lately—work, school runs, the usual chaos—and this place forced me to slow down. Gentle nudge from the universe, innit? A bit of self-reflection over a second glass: life's too short not to savour these pockets of nothing.

Weymouth's magic crept in without us chasing it—the promenade a five-minute amble for ice creams, the beach's shingle crunch underfoot if we fancied a toe-dip. But mostly, we stayed put, revelling in the joy of very little. That apartment, with its cosy nooks and garden bliss, turned a simple holiday into something restorative. Left feeling recharged, lighter. Can't wait to do bugger all there again.
