About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset last autumn – the leaves were just starting to turn that gorgeous coppery gold, carpeting the roads like nature’s own welcome mat. Me and the missus piled into the car from London, full of that buzzy anticipation you get before a proper getaway. But of course, five miles from our turning, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping round some narrow lanes near Swanage. We ended up in a muddy layby, laughing our heads off as I tried to reverse out without scraping the hedges. Classic me, always turning a simple journey into a mini adventure.

Finally rolling up to the property as the late afternoon sun dipped low, casting this magical amber glow over everything, my heart did a little flip. It was a cosy seaside chalet, all nestled in that quintessentially Studland spot, with the sea breeze whispering promises of relaxation. First impressions? Spot on. The garden felt like it was made for kicking back with a cuppa, and you could practically taste the salt in the air. Autumn’s softer light made the whole place look like a painting – no harsh summer glare, just this warm, inviting haze.

We wasted no time settling in. Mornings kicked off with walks along Studland Bay, where the beach was blissfully empty bar a few dog walkers. The season’s chill nipped at our cheeks, but it was invigorating, you know? The waves crashed a bit wilder with the autumn swell, and we’d spot seals bobbing about, their glossy heads popping up like cheeky locals saying hello. One day, we ambled over to the nature reserve – God, the bracken was alive with rustling reds and oranges, and the heather still clung on in defiant purple patches. It felt ancient and alive, shaped by those crisp, shortening days that make you appreciate every ray of sun.

Evenings were pure magic, thanks to that seasonal shift. We’d fire up the barbecue (yes, in October – Dorset weather held out just enough), grilling local sausages while the sky put on a show of fiery sunsets over Poole Harbour. The light faded early, drawing us inside to huddle by the wood burner with mugs of tea and a board game. No crowds, no queues – just us, wrapped in blankets, listening to the wind rustle the dunes outside. I had this gentle moment one night, staring into the flames, thinking how autumn strips things back to what matters: good company, simple joys, and not faffing about with sun cream for once.

A jaunt to nearby Shell Bay for fish and chips sealed it – crispy batter, steaming hot against the cool dusk air, eaten on a bench with gulls wheeling overhead. The time of year made it all feel intimate, unhurried. No sweaty hikes in peak summer heat; instead, layers on, boots crunching through damp leaves, and that fresh, earthy scent everywhere. Looking back, it was the perfect reset – Dorset in autumn wrapped us up like a favourite jumper, reminding me to slow down and savour the quieter bits of life. Can’t wait to go back.
