About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset last summer – me, the wife, and our two lads crammed into the car with enough snacks to feed a small army. We’d been buzzing about this holiday cottage for weeks, picturing lazy days by the sea, but about halfway there, disaster struck. The sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us on a wild detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. “Are we lost, Dad?” piped up little Ollie from the back, crumbs all over his lap. Turns out we were only a few miles off, but by the time we rolled up, we were starving and a bit frazzled. Still, as we pulled into that quiet spot near Studland, the anticipation melted away – the salty air hit us first, then the sight of the sea peeking through the hedges. What a first impression!

The cottage itself was a proper gem, one of those cosy family places with a lived-in charm that screams “kick back and relax”. Think whitewashed walls, a welcoming porch piled with wellies, and inside, mismatched cushions on the sofa that just begged for a family pile-in. We dumped the bags and headed straight out – couldn’t resist a wander down to Studland Bay. The beach there is pure magic, all golden sands and dunes that stretch forever. The boys were off like rockets, building lopsided sandcastles while we parents flopped on the towels with a thermos of tea. I even managed a quick dip in the shallows – bracing, but worth it for that holiday glow.

Days blurred into this blissful rhythm of simple pleasures. Mornings kicked off with chaotic breakfasts in the cottage kitchen – burnt toast, spilled milk, and everyone fighting over the last bit of marmalade. Then we’d amble over to the local shop for pasties and fudge, proper Dorset treats that taste of childhood. Afternoons were for pottering along the coastal paths towards Old Harry Rocks, those chalky stacks jutting out like nature’s own sculptures. We’d stop for pebble-hunting (the boys collected enough to fill a bucket), and I had one of those dad moments of gentle reflection: watching them scamper ahead, I realised how these unhurried days recharge the batteries like nothing else. No screens, just wind in your hair and waves crashing below.

Evenings brought the best cottage chaos – barbecues on the patio with sausages charring just right, followed by board games that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations. One night, a cheeky fox snuck in and nicked a burger right off the plate – we all howled with laughter as it scarpered into the dusk. It was daft, perfect family stuff.

Studland’s got that rare vibe where you feel miles from the world, yet everything’s on your doorstep – the nature reserve paths alive with birds, or a gentle cycle to the village pub for a pint of local ale. No grand plans, just us soaking up the relaxed Dorset magic. Coming home felt bittersweet, but we’re already plotting a return. If you’re after a proper family unwind, this is the spot – mishaps and all.
