About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Weymouth – one of those classic British summer jaunts where the sat-nav decides to have a midlife crisis just as you hit the A354. We’d packed the car with enough crisps, beach toys, and half-eaten sandwiches to survive a siege, the kids buzzing in the back about building sandcastles big enough to topple the lighthouse. But no, five miles from our turning, the heavens opened, and we ended up splashing through a puddle the size of Chesil Beach, soaking the windscreen wipers into oblivion. Cue Dad (me) swearing under my breath while Mum heroically navigated with her phone. A proper comedy of errors, but it only made the anticipation sweeter – visions of kicking back by the sea, no schedules, just us and the waves.

Pulling into the private driveway felt like striking gold. There it was, our spot marked No7, free parking for the whole stay – a proper luxury in Weymouth where you’d otherwise fork out over £20 a day or risk one of those cheeky fines. We tumbled out, grinning like idiots, and stepped inside this cracking little flat right on Stavordale Road. Harbour Reach 7, they call it, and from that very first moment, it delivered. Cosy, spotless, with everything you need for a family unwind – sea views peeking through the windows, a kitchen stocked for impromptu picnics, and that effortless charm that screams “relax here, you’ve earned it.”

First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and legged it straight to the beach, just a hop away. Weymouth’s sands are magic for kids – shallow waters perfect for paddling, and we spent hours faffing about with buckets, the little ones shrieking as the tide nipped their toes. Chaos ensued when our youngest decided to bury his sister up to her neck in sand; she emerged looking like a disgruntled mermaid, but the giggles made it all gold. Evenings were pure bliss: fish and chips from the harbour front, eaten on the balcony with gulls eyeing us jealously. No fancy restaurants, just simple pleasures – a bag of doughnuts from the bakery on St Mary Street, or an ice cream that dripped faster than the kids could lick.

One afternoon, we wandered to Nothe Fort, that quirky old spot with cannons and tunnels – the boys went wild pretending to defend against pirates, while I snuck off for a quiet bench moment. Sat there, watching the bay sparkle, I had a proper think. Life back home’s a whirlwind of school runs and deadlines, but here? It’s the cottage life chaos I secretly crave – sand in the bedsheets, sticky fingerprints everywhere, yet somehow restorative. Makes you realise how these little escapes recharge the batteries, don’t it?

We even squeezed in a lazy cycle along the harbour path, stopping for pasties at the market, and one rainy morning turned into a den-building frenzy in the lounge. No grand adventures, just family rhythm – the kind that leaves you fuller than a post-beach fry-up. Driving away, I was already plotting the return. Weymouth’s got that pull; simple, sunny, and utterly ours for the week. If you’re after a relaxed family break, this is where it begins.
