About Dorset
I finally made it to Dorset after what felt like the world's longest drive from London, complete with a classic mishap when my sat-nav decided to send me on a scenic detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel past a flock of confused sheep. Still, as I crested the hill and spotted the sea shimmering in the distance, all that stress melted away. I was buzzing with anticipation – proper holiday vibes kicking in, you know?

Pulling up to this cosy beachside cottage, I was chuffed to bits. It had that perfect laid-back style, all light and airy with big windows framing the dunes, just begging for sandy feet and lazy afternoons. First impressions? Spot on. I dumped my bags and headed straight for the kitchen, starving after the drive.

Day one, I pottered into Studland village, no more than a short stroll away, and hit up the local shop for supplies. They had the freshest crab and prawns from the bay – couldn't resist grabbing a load to mess about with. Back at the cottage, I attempted my first feast: a simple seafood linguine. Now, I'm no Gordon Ramsay, but let's just say the pasta stuck to the pan a bit and the garlic was more 'vampire repellent' than subtle. Still, scoffed outside on the patio with a cold cider, waves crashing nearby, it tasted like heaven. Laughed at myself later, thinking how I always bite off more than I can chew with these cooking larks – classic me, overambitious in the kitchen.

Next morning, we wandered to the village pub, a proper Dorset gem with low ceilings and that welcoming hum of chatter. Breakfast was a full works fry-up: crispy bacon, plump sausages from a local butcher, and eggs so fresh they practically winked at you. Paired with builder's tea, it set us up perfectly for a gentle beach amble. Lunch was more of the same indulgence – I snaffled a ploughman's at a seaside café, chunks of mature cheddar, crusty bread, and tangy pickle that had me moaning appreciatively. Who needs Michelin stars when you've got this?

Evenings were pub central. One night at the local, I went for the catch of the day – plump cod in beer batter, chips fat and golden, mushy peas on the side. Washed down with a pint of the house ale, it was pure bliss. Another evening, I tried my hand at a cottage pie with mince from the Studland market stall we'd spotted that morning. Those stalls are brilliant – seasonal veg, homemade chutneys, and the friendliest chatter from locals. My version wasn't half bad, if I say so myself, though the mash was a tad lumpy. Shared it with mates over board games, bellies full and sides splitting with laughter.

Reflecting on it now, holidays like this remind me to slow down and savour the simple stuff – nothing beats faffing in a cottage kitchen or propping up a pub bar with sand still between your toes. Dorset's food scene is unpretentious gold: fresh, hearty, and full of character. Can't wait to go back and perfect that linguine.
