About Dorset
Pulling up to the property, my heart did a little flip. Tucked away in Studland, it was this cosy beachside cottage, all whitewashed charm with a garden that practically begged for a GandT at sunset. First impressions? Spot on. The sea views from the lounge window had us grinning like kids, and after unpacking, we cracked open a bottle of local cider to celebrate not killing each other on the drive. From there, it was pure off-the-beaten-path magic. No grand plans, just wandering. Our first “gem” came the next morning when we decided to stretch our legs along the shore. Instead of the main beach path everyone flocks to, we veered off onto a scruffy little trail through the dunes – you know, the sort that looks like it leads to nothing. Half a mile in, we stumbled on this hidden cove, barely a speck on the map. Crystal water lapping at white sand, not a soul in sight. We spent hours there, paddling and picnicking on cheese sarnies, feeling like we’d nicked a private paradise. The real joy kicked in when we embraced getting lost. One afternoon, aiming for a vague walk to Old Harry Rocks, we took a “shortcut” through the heathland behind the cottage. Paths fizzled out into bracken, and soon we were proper disoriented, laughing at our rubbish sense of direction. But that’s when we found it: a secluded viewpoint overlooking the bay, with gorse bushes buzzing with bees and the sea stretching out like a promise. Sat there with flasks of tea, watching seals bob about, I had one of those quiet moments – you know, reflecting on how rushing everywhere misses these bits. Life’s too short for signposted routes; the best stuff hides in the detours. Evenings were for ambling to tiny Studland spots we’d never have sought out. A blink-and-you-miss-it café serving crab sandwiches fresher than the tide, or a wildflower meadow path that looped back to nowhere special – except it felt special. One night, getting “lost” again led to a sunset bench overlooking the marshes, pint in hand from the village shop. Pure bliss. By the end of the week, we’d barely scratched the tourist trails, but our souls were full of Dorset’s secrets. That little mishap on the drive? Best thing that happened. Here’s to more holidays where losing your way wins every time. |
