About Dorset
I finally made it to Dorset after what felt like the world's most disorganised drive down from London. I'd packed the car the night before like a pro – or so I thought – but halfway through Wiltshire, I realised I'd left my phone charger at home and the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, rerouting us through every sleepy village in the county. My other half was convinced we'd end up in Southampton by mistake, and I was sweating bullets trying to juggle Google Maps on my dwindling battery while the kids in the back seat chanted "Are we there yet?" like a broken record. Classic family holiday start, innit?

By the time we trundled into Studland, the sun was dipping low, painting the sky all golden over Poole Harbour. We'd been dreaming about this for weeks – visions of sandy beaches and lazy walks – but the real buzz hit as we crested that last hill and spotted the sea winking at us. Heart lifted, I thought, right, this is it, proper escape time.

Pulling up to the property, though, was pure chaos. It's one of those cosy seaside cottages, all tucked away with that quintessentially English charm – whitewashed walls, a cheeky little garden bursting with hydrangeas, and windows framing the most stunning views straight out to Brownsea Island and the harbour. But oh, the arrival farce. I reversed into the tiniest parking spot known to man, clipping the wing mirror on a rogue wheelie bin in the process. Crunch. "That's £200 down the drain," I muttered, while the family piled out laughing. Then, wrestling with the key safe – wrong code twice, naturally – I dropped the keys into a flowerbed. On my knees in the dusk, fishing them out like a deranged gnome, I couldn't help chuckling. What a plonker.

Stepping inside made it all worthwhile, though. The place just wrapped you up in that warm, lived-in feel – fresh linen on the beds, a telly bigger than our lounge one at home, and a kitchen stocked with everything from cafetière to board games. First impressions? Blown away. We dumped the bags and dashed straight to the terrace with mugs of tea, watching seals bob about in the water as the light faded. Studland Beach is literally a stone's throw – well, five minutes' stroll – and the air smelled of salt and adventure.

That first evening, we wandered down to the beach as the tide whispered in, toes sinking into the soft sand. The kids built a wonky castle while we cracked open a bottle of fizz, toasting our mishap-filled arrival. Sat there, I had a proper moment – you know, that quiet realisation that life's little cock-ups make the good bits shine brighter. Here we were, in this perfect Dorset hideaway, with nothing but days of paddling in the shallows, pub lunches at the Bankes Arms, and maybe a ferry hop over to Sandbanks if the weather held. No traffic jams, no deadlines. Just us, the sea, and a story to laugh about for years. Can't wait for tomorrow's explorations.
