About Dorset
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset last month – me, my partner, and our cheeky spaniel, Monty, crammed into the car with the sat-nav bossily directing us through those winding lanes. We’d left London at dawn, full of beans and dreaming of cream teas, but about an hour in, disaster struck: a wrong turn near Blandford Forum had us ploughing straight into a muddy farm track. “Brilliant,” I muttered, as the wheels spun uselessly and Monty eyed me with that ‘told you so’ look. Twenty minutes of reverse manoeuvres later, we were back on track, caked in splatter but laughing about it. By the time we trundled into Stourpaine, I was buzzing with anticipation – this tucked-away village in the heart of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty felt like our secret escape already.

Pulling up to the cottage, my jaw dropped. It’s this enchanting thatched gem, straight out of a storybook, all chic and cosy for just the two of us (plus Monty, who claimed the rug immediately). High-end touches everywhere, from the plush bedding to the telly bigger than our flat’s, but it’s the romantic vibe that hits you – perfect for a luxury hideaway without a whiff of pretension. First impressions? Pure magic. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of local fizz, and just soaked it in.

The real joy, though, was stumbling on Dorset’s hidden corners by pure accident. No grand itineraries here; we let the lanes lead us astray, and boy, did they deliver. One morning, fancying a gentle wander, we missed the sign for the village hall and ended up on a footpath snaking through Stourpaine’s meadows. It spat us out at a forgotten picnic spot by the River Stour – wildflowers everywhere, dippers flitting over the water, not a soul in sight. We picnicked on cheese from the local farm shop (cheddar so sharp it could cut glass) and watched kingfishers dart about. Felt like we’d gatecrashed paradise.

Another day, a ‘quick loop’ around the village ballooned into a proper adventure when we took a left instead of right past the pub. Lost in hazel woods, we chanced upon a secluded valley dell – think babbling brook, ancient oaks, and a bench that screamed ‘sit here forever’. Monty went feral chasing butterflies, while we munched pasties from the Stourpaine bakery. Pure off-the-beaten-path bliss, the kind of spot guidebooks ignore because it’s too good to share.

Evenings were for pottering back, firing up the wood burner, and cooking with bits from the nearby honesty box veg stall we’d found by mistake down a no-through-road. One night, reflecting over a GandT, I caught myself grinning – here I was, the city slicker who once scoffed at ‘slow travel’, utterly hooked on getting gloriously lost. Dorset does that to you; strips away the rush and hands you these quiet gems that feel like personal gifts. We left with muddy boots, full hearts, and a promise to return. If you crave a proper getaway where the best finds are the accidental ones, this is your spot. Couldn’t recommend it more.
