About Art Studio.

Blandford Forum, a market town beside the River Stour in Dorset, is famed for its Georgian architecture. Most of it was rebuilt in the 18th century after a devastating fire in 1731, funded by King George II and designed by architects John and William Bastard. The town hosts the annual Blandford Georgian Fayre in early May with speeches, re-enactments, music and dance. The Great Dorset Steam Fair is its biggest event over the late Bank Holiday weekend.

Our trip to Dorset staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset – rain lashing the windscreen like it had a personal grudge, and then, just past Salisbury, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and sent us looping round some muddy back lane. Typical me, hadn’t checked the signal properly. But as we finally trundled into Blandford Forum, the clouds parted like they’d been waiting for us, and there it was: this gorgeous little studio-style chalet tucked into 28 acres of private gardens and woodlands. Heart lifted instantly – the place looked like a proper rural hug, all inviting and tucked away.

We parked up, hauled our bags up the steps (not too steep, mind, but enough to work up a bit of an appetite), and stepped into this light-flooded haven. It’s perfect for two, with a cosy kitchenette, a wee dining spot, and a telly for those rainy moments. But honestly, who needs the telly when you’ve got a deck out back and a private hot tub? We cracked open a bottle from the on-site vineyard – proper local stuff, crisp and cheeky – and settled in straight away. First impressions? Spot on. Felt like the world had hit pause.

The joy of it all was doing sod all, really. After years of rushing about, this was my gentle nudge to slow down. Mornings started lazy: potter to the kitchenette for tea and toast, then flop into one of those comfy chairs with a book. I devoured half a detective novel that first day, only breaking off to wander the gardens. Those woodlands are magic – dappled paths winding through ferns and ancient trees, birds cheeping away like they owned the place. I’d find a sunny bench, close my eyes, and just listen. No agenda, no timetable. Bliss.

Afternoons blurred into hot tub sessions. Sinking into that bubbling warmth, staring at the sky turning from blue to pink, was pure therapy. We’d nibble cheese and crackers alfresco on the deck, watching rabbits hop about the lawns. One evening, a deer poked its nose out from the trees – close enough to wave at, if you’re daft like me. Dinner was simple: pasta flung together, eaten outside as the sun dipped. No faffing about town; Blandford’s market square is a five-minute drive if you fancy, but why bother when paradise is right here?

There was this moment, second night, bubbling away under the stars, when it hit me. Life’s too short for constant hustle. Here, with the quiet hum of the countryside and my other half dozing beside me, I felt properly recharged. No grand adventures, just the simple thrill of switching off. We even brought the dog – he claimed the rug as his throne, snoring through it all.

A few days of that, and we left feeling lighter, promising ourselves more of the same. If you’re after a romantic bolt-hole to properly unwind, this Dorset gem’s your spot. Proper holiday magic.
