We'd barely made it out of the car park in Bridport when the heavens opened, turning our optimistic “just a quick stroll to the cottage” into a proper dash through the rain with two dripping suitcases and a half-eaten packet of biscuits. The four-bed place sat tucked just behind the shingle, its pale stone glowing against the sudden grey sky, and we tumbled inside laughing at how daft we looked.

Once the kettle was on, the cottage felt instantly welcoming—big, airy rooms that smelled faintly of sea air and fresh laundry, with windows that looked straight onto the path leading down to the beach. The rain eased as quickly as it had started, so we swapped soggy trainers for walking boots and headed out along the coast path towards West Bay. The cliffs rose in soft, golden layers on our left, and the sea, now calm again, glittered under patches of blue. It was one of those classic Dorset moments where you feel you’ve stolen a bit of summer even though the forecast had promised otherwise.

We followed the trail for a couple of miles, stopping every so often to watch the waves crash against the rocks below. The path was busy with other walkers—families with dogs, couples with maps flapping in the breeze—and everyone exchanged the same cheerful “lovely when it stops raining, isn’t it?” nod. Further along, the trail opened onto a small grassy headland where we sat on a bench and shared the slightly crushed biscuits, watching a fishing boat chug past. It felt wonderfully ordinary and exactly what we’d hoped for.

By the time we turned back, the sun was properly out and the shingle beach below the cottage was dotted with people spreading towels. We kicked off our boots again and wandered down for a paddle, the water shockingly cold but somehow perfect after the walk. Back at the cottage we dried our feet on the little patio and planned the next day’s route along the same path but further west, promising each other we’d check the forecast properly this time.

Sitting there with a cup of tea, toes still sandy, I realised how quickly the day had shifted from soggy chaos to something quietly brilliant. The cottage hadn’t just given us somewhere to sleep; it had handed us the perfect base for exactly the sort of changeable, walk-when-you-can sort of holiday that Dorset does so well.
