About Dorset
The cottage sits just back from the beach path in Weymouth, all white walls and low ceilings that somehow feel bigger once the French doors are open. We left the suitcases by the stairs and headed straight out with the deckchairs, not bothering with a plan. The sun was already warm on the shingle, and the tide was far enough out that we could spread our things without worrying about getting soaked. I’d brought a book I’d been meaning to finish for months; by the time I’d read two pages I was mostly just watching the gulls wheel overhead and listening to the soft rattle of pebbles as the waves pulled back. Lunch was whatever we’d grabbed on the way down—pasties from the bakery in town and a couple of apples—and we ate them on the little patio behind the house, feet up on the low wall. The garden catches the afternoon light beautifully, and we stayed there for ages, topping up mugs of tea and doing absolutely nothing of consequence. Every so often one of us would mention a walk along the esplanade, but neither of us moved. It felt like permission to be properly idle. Later we wandered down to the water’s edge with bare feet, the stones cool under the surface. We didn’t go far—just far enough to feel the sea on our ankles and watch a family trying to fly a kite that kept dive-bombing the sand. Back at the cottage the windows were still open, and the smell of salt and warm wood drifted through. I found myself stretched out on the sofa with the same unread book, half-dozing while my partner pottered about making toast. It struck me how rarely we let a whole afternoon stretch like that without filling it. By evening the light had turned that soft gold that makes everything look gentler. We sat outside again, this time with jumpers, watching the sky fade over the bay. The mishap with the keys already felt like something that had happened to other people. Here, the only real decision was whether to light the little fire pit or simply call it a day. We chose the latter, and as I climbed the stairs I realised the best part of the holiday so far had been the hours we’d spent doing nothing at all. |
