About Dorset
“Lost, were you?” he called, and before I could answer he’d launched into a story about the last lot who’d followed their satnav onto the same track and ended up towing a caravan out with a tractor. I laughed, he chuckled, and within minutes I was being introduced to his wife Maureen, who appeared with a plate of still-warm scones “just in case you hadn’t stopped.” Their conversation drifted easily from the best beach spots to the time the local lifeboat crew had mistaken a lost paddleboarder for a seal, and I found myself leaning on the gate too, bags forgotten, listening as though I’d lived here for years rather than minutes. A little later, while I was still trying to locate the kettle, another neighbour popped round—Graham, who runs the little kiosk on the beach path. He’d heard I’d arrived and wanted to know whether I preferred my chips with “proper curry sauce or the daft stuff they sell in towns.” When I admitted I hadn’t thought that far ahead, he nodded as if this confirmed something important and promised to save me the last portion on Friday. By the time I’d carried my things inside, I’d also met young Ellie from the surf-hire hut, who offered to show me the quickest way down to the water if I didn’t mind her dog coming too. Each encounter felt less like small talk and more like being gently absorbed into the rhythm of the place. What struck me most, watching the light fade over the bay from the cottage window, was how little I’d expected the first few hours to be shaped by other people’s stories rather than my own plans. The mishap on the farm track had somehow turned into an unplanned welcome committee, and the cottage itself felt less like a place to retreat and more like a front-row seat to whatever conversation might wander past next. I’d come for sea air and quiet; instead I’d found Reg’s sheep stories, Maureen’s scones, and the promise of decent chips. It wasn’t the arrival I’d pictured, but it already felt like the sort of start that might linger longer than the tan. |
