About Dorset
The Old Stables sits right on the edge of West Bay, tucked behind a low stone wall with a view straight onto the shingle. From the lane you’d hardly notice it—just a neat wooden sign and a gravel drive wide enough for one careful car. We rolled to a stop, still giggling about the crisp-packet incident, and the first thing that hit me was how quiet it was. Not silent, exactly; you could hear the sea doing its steady shush-shush beyond the beach huts, but the kind of quiet that makes motorway drone feel like a distant memory. The owners had left the key in a little lockbox by the blue door, and stepping inside felt like walking into someone’s well-loved front room rather than a holiday let. There was a squashy sofa facing French windows that opened onto a tiny patio, a wood-burner already laid ready for later, and the faint scent of coffee from whoever had been there last. Upstairs, the bedroom windows looked straight out over the rooftops to the Cobb and the cliffs beyond, their white faces catching the last of the afternoon light. We dumped the bags, kicked off shoes still gritty from the service station, and wandered the few steps down to the beach. The tide was out, leaving long stretches of damp sand perfect for a barefoot wander before supper. A couple of locals were walking their dogs, and one of them nodded as if we already belonged there. Back at the cottage the patio caught the last warmth of the sun, so we sat with mugs of tea and watched a fishing boat chug slowly toward the harbour mouth. What struck me most, after the long drive and the silly crisp-packet panic, was how quickly the shoulders drop. You arrive wound tight from traffic and wrong turns, and within half an hour the sea has done its work. I caught myself already planning nothing more ambitious than a morning swim and maybe a pasty from the kiosk by the car park—small ambitions that suddenly felt like the right size for a weekend. |
