Our trip to Dorset staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset last autumn – leaves turning that perfect golden hue, crisp air sneaking through the car window, but of course, I managed to cock it up right from the start. About ten miles out from Blandford Forum, the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis and sent me looping down some narrow country lane that was more puddle than path after a week of those sneaky October showers. Mud everywhere, heart in my mouth, but honestly, it just added to the anticipation. By the time I finally pulled up, I was buzzing – this was going to be my cosy hideaway, and Dorset in autumn felt like it was rolling out the red carpet of rustling foliage just for me.

The place was a stylish chalet tucked into 28 acres of countryside, gardens, and woodland on the edge of Blandford Forum – proper inviting for two, with that tranquil vibe you crave when you’re escaping the daily grind. First impressions? Spot on. Parked up, wandered in, and bam – contemporary living space with a plush sofa begging me to flop down, a telly for lazy evenings, a little dining setup for two, and a sleek kitchen that had everything from posh tea towels to a proper coffee machine. But it was the seasonal magic outside that hit me hardest. Autumn had turned the gardens into a riot of amber and crimson, with the woodland paths carpeted in crunchy leaves that whispered underfoot. I felt like I’d stepped into a Constable painting, minus the crowds.

That first afternoon, I couldn’t resist a potter around the grounds. The air was that fresh, apple-ripe chill that makes your cheeks glow, and the low sun filtered through the trees like fairy dust. Nipped over to the communal games area – nothing fancy, just a bit of outdoor table tennis and a swing – but with the mist rolling in from the nearby hills, it felt like my own private adventure playground. Dinner was alfresco on the patio, wrapped in a blanket against the evening nip, listening to the wildlife chattering away – owls starting their hoots early, squirrels rustling last nuts. The hot tub was the real star, though. Slipped in as dusk fell, steam rising into the cooling air, surrounded by the glow of fairy lights strung through the autumn branches. Pure bliss, that indulgent soak with bubbles and a glass of local fizz from Downwood Vineyard, just a short stroll away. Their autumn reds were spot on, all mulled-fruit notes that matched the season perfectly.

Next day, we ambled into Blandford Forum itself – five minutes down the road, market town charm with a Saturday market heaving under canvas awnings, selling pumpkin pasties and seasonal squash. Grabbed a walk along the Stour Valley paths, where the river was glassy under fiery willows, and the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty lived up to its name with every turning leaf. Back at the chalet, evenings blurred into hot tub rituals, stargazing through clearing skies – autumn’s clarity making the constellations pop like they never do in summer smog.

Looking back, that little mishap on the drive was a blessing. Autumn shaped everything – the mellow light, the earthy scents, the way the chill made every warm moment glow. It got me reflecting on how I rush through life; this retreat forced me to slow down, breathe in the decay and renewal. Dorset in fall? It’s not just a holiday; it’s a gentle nudge to savour the fleeting bits. Can’t wait to go back.
