Our trip to Dorset staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Dorset last month – me behind the wheel, my wife navigating with that sat-nav that kept insisting we turn left into a field. We’d been looking forward to this couple’s getaway for ages, just us two escaping the daily grind for some proper countryside peace. But about 20 miles from Dorchester, disaster struck: a rogue pheasant decided our windscreen was its personal launchpad. Feathers everywhere, heart in my mouth, and us pulling over on a narrow lane laughing like idiots while I scraped off the evidence with a Costa cup. “Welcome to rural England,” I quipped, and off we went again, anticipation bubbling up as the rolling hills of West Dorset came into view.

Pulling into the pretty hamlet of Lower Wraxall felt like stepping into a postcard. Nestled amid glorious countryside, this little gem of a cottage was everything we’d hoped – furnished and equipped to an exemplary standard with luxury touches throughout, like that stunning copper bath and a sheltered hot tub on the garden terrace. First impressions? Pure magic. The sun was dipping low, casting a golden glow over the garden, and we dumped our bags, cracked open a bottle of local cider, and just breathed it all in. No kids, no emails, just us and the birdsong.

The next few days blurred into that perfect cottage rhythm – the kind of relaxed family-couple break where chaos meets bliss. Mornings started slow: brewing tea in the cosy kitchen, then a short wander to the nearby footpaths for a gentle hike through lush fields dotted with grazing sheep. We’d pack a picnic of Dorset cheese and apple from the farm shop just down the lane in Dorchester – nothing fancy, but it tasted like heaven sat on a drystone wall, watching the world go by. One afternoon, I tried my hand at “helping” with lunch, only to set off the smoke alarm with slightly overzealous toast. My wife rolled her eyes, handed me a tea towel, and we ended up eating it charred and chuckling – proper cottage life, innit?

Evenings were for unwinding. That hot tub became our sanctuary; bubbles fizzing under the stars, a glass of wine in hand, chatting about everything and nothing. We ventured into Dorchester for a mooch around the market, picking up fresh pasties and nipping into a quirky café for cake that was basically a love letter to butter. One rainy spell had us curling up with a board game, the patter on the roof turning a potential washout into the coziest hour. I had a quiet moment of self-reflection there, staring into my tea: when did we last switch off like this? Work had us both knackered, chasing deadlines like headless chickens. This break reminded me it’s the simple stuff – shared laughs, no-rush days – that recharges the batteries.

We left with full hearts and a promise to return. Dorset’s got that pull, doesn’t it? If you’re after a spot of unpretentious luxury amid the chaos of real life, seek out a hideaway like this. It’s the kind of holiday that sticks with you.
