Our trip to Dorset staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that gorgeous spot near Corfe Castle – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through some narrow lanes that felt more like tractor tracks than roads. Then, just as we crested a hill with those epic views of the castle ruins popping into sight, we had a puncture. Yes, really. There I was, in the pouring Dorset drizzle, wrestling with a spare tyre while the kids moaned from the car and my other half rang every garage within a ten-mile radius. Half an hour later, muddy and triumphant, we finally rolled up to the holiday house, hearts racing with that mix of relief and bubbling excitement.

Pulling into the drive, though, all the chaos melted away like morning mist off the Purbeck Hills. It’s this charming detached place, tucked away in the countryside with fields stretching out – and wouldn’t you know it, a few sheep were grazing lazily nearby, giving us a proper rural welcome. Stepping inside felt like sinking into a warm hug; the sitting room glowed from the wood burning stove, already crackling away (bless the hosts for lighting it), and the whole vibe screamed cosy getaway. We dumped our bags and made a beeline for the hot tub out back – luxurious doesn’t even cover it. After that morning’s faff, bubbling away with a cuppa in hand was pure bliss, the steam rising as the sun peeked out over the rolling fields.

First impressions? Spot on. The games room kept the kids entertained with table football and board games while we unpacked, and those two toasty stoves promised evenings of pure lounging. We ventured out that afternoon for a gentle wander up to Corfe Castle – it’s only a short hop away, those jagged ruins looming dramatically against the sky. Clambering up the paths, wind in our hair, we felt miles from the world, even spotting a few wild ponies on the heath. Back at the house, dinner was a simple affair: local pasties from the village shop in Worth Matravers, devoured by the fire with stories of our puncture escapade.

Reflecting on it now, that mishap was the perfect icebreaker – turned what could’ve been a grumpy start into laughs we’re still sharing. In a world of rushed holidays, this spot near the castle was a reminder to slow down, breathe in the countryside air, and let the little glitches make the memories. If you’re after a tranquil retreat for family or mates, with sheep for company and a hot tub for unwinding, it’s hard to beat. We left already plotting our return.
