Our trip to Dorset staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Dorset after what felt like the world's most convoluted drive from London. Picture this: me, sat-nav in one hand, a lukewarm Costa in the other, convinced I'd cracked the art of a stress-free road trip. Then, about 20 miles from Sherborne, the heavens opened and my windscreen wipers decided to stage a rebellion—smearing more than clearing. Cue a frantic pull-over on a narrow lane near Yeovil, me hopping out in the downpour to jiggle some wires, only to realise I'd left the handbrake half-off. Heart in mouth, I nudged the car back into gear, dripping wet and smelling faintly of regret. By the time I spotted the turn-off for Saxon Maybank, I was frazzled, questioning every life choice that led to this soggy adventure.

But oh, pulling up to this little couples' retreat near Bradford Abbas? Instant magic. Nestled in that tranquil pocket just shy of Sherborne, it's the sort of spot that whispers "relax" before you've even killed the engine. A cosy, modern hideaway with all the thoughtful touches—think welcoming lights glowing through the dusk, and that hot tub bubbling away like it knew I needed it. First impressions? Bloody brilliant (sorry, nearly swore there). We tumbled out of the car—me still wringing out my hoodie, my other half laughing at my drowned-rat vibe—and there it was: our perfect bolthole, all inviting and low-key stylish, screaming "forget the world outside."

We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of local Somerset cider (grabbed from a farm shop en route, naturally), sinking into the plush seating with views over the gentle Dorset countryside. The anticipation on that last stretch of lane had me buzzing—would it live up to the photos? Mate, it exceeded. That first evening, we fired up the hot tub under a clearing sky, jets pounding away the drive's chaos. I caught myself grinning like an idiot, steam rising around us, thinking, "This is it, innit? Proper unwind time." A bit of gentle self-reflection hit me then: how often do I barrel through life at full pelt, missing these pockets of peace? Here, five minutes from Sherborne's abbey and cafes but worlds away in vibe, it was a nudge to slow down.

Next morning, chaos forgotten, we wandered the short hop to Bradford Abbas for a pub brekkie—proper greasy spoon stuff with crispy bacon that mended any lingering grumps. Then it was Sherborne time: mooching round the high street's indie shops, nipping into the tea rooms for scones slathered in clotted cream (Dorset does it best). Back at the retreat, lazy afternoons meant hot tub dips, perhaps a gentle stroll along the nearby lanes spotting sheep and buzzards. Evenings? Barbecue on the patio, stars popping out over the fields. No grand plans, just that easy rhythm—arriving in a flap made the calm hit harder, like the universe's way of saying "you're welcome."

Honestly, if you're after a Dorset do-over without the faff, this Sax Maybank gem's your spot. Messy start and all, it turned into the holiday that reminded me why I love these quiet corners of England. Can't wait to go back—minus the wiper drama, hopefully.
