Our trip to Forest Of Dean staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive to our little holiday cottage in the Forest of Dean – a proper trek from the motorway, winding through those lush Gloucestershire lanes. We’d loaded up the car with wellies, maps, and enough snacks to feed a small army, buzzing with excitement about all the walking trails ahead. But about halfway there, disaster struck: a flat tyre on a narrow country road, right in the pouring rain. Me, playing the hero with the spare, ended up covered in mud and looking like a drowned rat. The kids thought it was hilarious, though, and we laughed it off as our first Forest of Dean adventure.

Finally rolling up the forest track just as the sun peeked out, I felt that proper holiday anticipation – you know, that tingle of escaping the daily grind. Tucked away in the heart of it all, this welcoming three-bed cottage was just what we needed: cosy, rustic vibes with a neighbouring campsite of shepherd’s huts adding to the charm. First impressions? Spot on. The air was crisp, birds chirping, and trails stretching out like invitations. We dumped the bags and hit the paths straight away.

Day one was bliss – glorious blue skies for a family hike along the family-friendly trails right from the door. Miles of woodland paths, dappled sunlight filtering through ancient trees, perfect for little legs. We spotted deer and chatted about nothing much, just soaking it in. I remember pausing on a log, thinking how rare it is to switch off completely – no emails, no rush. That gentle moment of reflection hit me: why don’t we do this more often?

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour. Next morning, the heavens opened, turning our planned all-day ramble into a muddy scramble. Undeterred, we layered up and tackled a shorter loop near Hopewell Colliery, about five miles off. Waterproofs squeaking, puddles splashing everywhere – the kids turned it into a game of who could jump the biggest. It was chaotic fun, slipping and giggling, but by lunch we were soaked to the skin, retreating to the cottage for hot chocolate and board games. Classic, innit?

The weather flipped again mid-week, gifting us a crisp, sunny spell for a proper adventure on the trails around Go Ape! – just five minutes away. Treetop views from up high, then down to winding forest paths carpeted in leaves. We even squeezed in a rainy-day stroll to the Dean Heritage Centre nearby, dodging showers under umbrellas, learning bits about the area’s mining past while the mist rolled in. Each hike felt different: sunny ones full of birdsong and picnics, wet ones testing our resolve with that fresh post-rain earthiness.

By the end, we’d walked our socks off – literally, in one kid’s case after a puddle mishap. The Forest of Dean’s trails are magic, whatever the forecast throws at you. It reminded me that the best holidays bend with the wind (and rain). We left muddy-booted, full-bellied, and already plotting a return. If you fancy proper outdoor unwinding, this is the spot.
