Our trip to Forest Of Dean staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Finally rolling up to the property, my heart did a little flip of excitement. Peacefully tucked away in the heart of the Forest, this truly unique spot was a former cowshed brimming with character, right on the fringes of the traditional working village of Bream. First impressions? Magic. The valley position felt like our own secret nook, with the pub, shops, coffee spot, chemist, post office, and chippy all just a stroll away. No faffing about with long drives – everything you need, plus a load you didn’t know you wanted. We wasted no time diving into the Forest’s off-the-beaten-track vibes. The whole trip turned into this glorious game of getting lost on purpose. One morning, wandering off the main paths near Symonds Yat Rock, we stumbled on a hidden cave mouth half-covered in moss – not the touristy ones, but a proper echoey chamber where we shone our phone torches and felt like explorers. Turns out it’s one of those local secrets for caving newbies, and we spent hours pottering about, laughing when I bashed my helmet (yes, we borrowed proper gear from a Bream contact). Another gem? We followed a whim down a cycle trail fringe – not the downhill beasts that test the pros, but a gentle one that led us to an abandoned lime kiln, overgrown and whispering history. Picnicked there with cheese from the village shop, watching buzzards circle. Pure bliss. Evenings, we’d canoe the River Wye’s quieter bends, away from the crowds, spotting otters slipping by like shy neighbours. And that high-wire rope course? We found a lesser-known rope swing spot by accident, dangling over a misty valley – heart-in-mouth fun without the queues. The real joy was in those accidental discoveries, letting the Forest’s lanes lead us astray. One afternoon, looping back via Clearwell’s edges, we gatecrashed a tiny music jam in a village hall – locals with fiddles and a barrel of ale. No big festivals for us; these hidden pop-ups were the stuff dreams are made of. Looking back, I reckon I needed that self-reflection time. City life had me rushing everywhere, but getting lost here slowed me right down. Taught me there’s joy in not knowing the way – just following the light through the trees. If you’re after a holiday that feels like uncovering buried treasure, this is it. We’re already plotting a return. |
