Our trip to Forest Of Dean staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Forest of Dean – me at the wheel, my wife navigating with that app on her phone that kept rerouting us every five minutes. We’d left Bristol early, full of beans about our little getaway, but then disaster struck just past Gloucester: a flat tyre on the motorway. Cue me faffing about with the spare, covered in grime, while she rang the breakdown service and laughed at my “man vs machine” impression. Half an hour later, we were back on track, both giggling about how our relaxing break had started with a proper comedy of errors. Still, the anticipation built as we wound through those leafy lanes towards Longhope – I could almost taste the fresh air already.

Pulling up to the place, my first impressions were spot on. It’s this cracking four-bedroom holiday home tucked into the peaceful village, just the ticket for us as a couple wanting to switch off. Off-road parking meant no kerfuffle with the car, and that enclosed garden screamed lazy afternoons with a cuppa. A quick stroll to the local shop and pub? Perfect – no need for grand plans, just easy village life. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle of wine from the offie, and flopped on the sofa, grinning like idiots. It felt like home straight away, but better, without the mortgage nagging at you.

The next few days were pure cottage bliss, the sort of chaos that’s actually brilliant. Mornings kicked off with brekkie in the garden – scrambled eggs on toast, birdsong everywhere, and me burning the bacon because I got distracted by a squirrel invasion. We wandered down to the pub for a pint and a ploughman’s, chatting with locals about the best walks nearby. One afternoon, we ambled along the old railway path towards Lea Bailey Hill – nothing too strenuous, just enough to work up an appetite for elevenses from the village shop’s pasties. The Forest of Dean’s got that magic, doesn’t it? Towering trees, dappled sunlight, and not a soul in sight unless you fancy company.

Evenings were for self-catering shenanigans: me attempting a shepherd’s pie (heavy on the mash, light on finesse), her sorting the playlist with folk tunes and a bit of Radio 2. We’d light the fire – well, she did, I just cheered – and play board games till we were yawning. One night, the heavens opened, turning our garden BBQ dreams into a soggy dash for cover; we ended up dancing in the kitchen to dry off, laughing till our sides hurt. Simple pleasures, really – no schedules, no screens (much), just us pottering about.

Looking back, it was a gentle nudge that I need this more often. Life’s rush leaves you knackered, but a few days in a spot like this? It resets the soul. The Forest of Dean’s got it all for a chilled couple’s escape – peaceful villages, cracking walks, and that cosy home-from-home vibe. We’re already plotting the next one. If you’re after unwinding between the Wye Valley and Cotswolds, hunt out a gem like this. You won’t regret it.
