About North Devon
The cottage sat just far enough from the seafront that you could still hear the waves if the wind was right, yet it felt tucked away from the main strip of cafés and beach shops. Inside, everything was simple and sunlit: pale walls, a squashy sofa that had clearly hosted more lazy afternoons than we could count, and a kitchen table big enough for two takeaway fish-and-chips without any elbow battles. We dumped the bags, flicked the kettle on, and within ten minutes I was barefoot on the patio with a mug of tea that tasted better simply because I hadn’t rushed it. That first afternoon set the tone for the whole stay. We wandered down to the beach, shoes in hand, and spent an hour doing nothing more ambitious than watching the tide creep in over the flat sand. A few families were building elaborate sandcastles near the surf, but most people seemed content to sit on stripy towels and let the sun do the work. Back at the cottage we pulled the little table outside, spread out paperbacks we’d both brought and promptly ignored, and let the afternoon drift. Every so often one of us would remember we could walk the hundred yards to the shop for an ice cream, then decide it could wait another half hour. By the second morning the mishap on the lanes already felt like a story we’d told too many times. The real rhythm was waking whenever the light felt right, making coffee slowly, and carrying it down to the sand while the day was still cool. We read chapters between swims, dozed under the cottage’s striped parasol, and only moved when hunger finally outweighed the comfort of the deckchairs. Even the short stroll along the promenade to watch the surfers felt like an event rather than an errand. Looking back, the best part wasn’t any grand plan; it was realising how little we actually needed once the sun was out and the sea was within earshot. The tractor-induced detour had forced us to arrive a bit frazzled, yet the cottage and the beach between them had undone that in less than an afternoon. By the time we packed the car again I felt lighter, slightly sandier, and quietly grateful that sometimes the best holidays are the ones where you barely leave the postcode. |
