We’d barely made it past the roundabout on the edge of Bideford when the sat-nav decided we were somewhere near a farm track instead of the lane to the cottage. My husband, convinced it knew a shortcut, followed its instructions straight into a hedge. By the time we’d reversed out, laughing like a pair of idiots and brushing leaves off the windscreen, the children were already chanting “are we there yet?” with renewed vigour. Ten minutes later we pulled up outside the little whitewashed 4 Bed Cottage and everything felt suddenly right.

The front garden was barely more than a strip of grass and a bench, but the view across the rooftops to the hazy line of the sea made up for it. A light breeze carried that unmistakable mix of salt and warm tarmac you only get on a Devon afternoon. The key was exactly where the owner had promised, under the flowerpot by the door, and stepping inside felt like walking into someone’s well-loved front room rather than a holiday let. There were squashy sofas, a wood-burner already laid, and a kitchen table big enough for four noisy rounds of Uno without anyone having to move the cereal boxes.

We dumped the bags and wandered straight out again, the children tugging us towards the short path that leads down to the beach. It’s only a few minutes’ walk—long enough for small legs to complain, short enough for them to forget they ever did. The tide was on its way out, leaving wide, damp sand perfect for finding shells and the odd bit of driftwood. We paddled until our feet went numb, then trudged back up the lane with sandy toes and the sudden, urgent need for tea.

Back at the cottage the kettle whistled while the kids sprawled on the rug with their new pebbles. I stood at the kitchen window watching the light shift over the rooftops and felt that familiar, slightly guilty wave of relief: no emails, no school run, just the low murmur of the sea and the promise of fish and chips later. It struck me, as the steam fogged the glass, how rarely we manage to slow down like this at home. Here, the days already felt longer simply because nobody was rushing us through them.

By the time the sun dipped low enough to need jumpers, we’d claimed the biggest bedroom for ourselves and let the children argue cheerfully over who got the top bunk. Supper was eaten at the kitchen table with the door propped open, the sound of distant waves drifting in between bursts of laughter. Nothing dramatic had happened, yet the day already felt complete. I suppose that’s the quiet magic of these places: you arrive in a fluster, trip over a hedge or two, and somehow, by teatime, you’ve already started to remember how to just be.
