About North Devon
Inside, everything smelled faintly of woodsmoke and fresh linen. We dumped our bags, flicked on the kettle, and decided a quick stroll before dark couldn’t hurt. That was our first mistake. Instead of heading straight down to the obvious beach path, we followed a narrow footway that appeared between two hedges and promptly lost all sense of direction. Twenty minutes later we were standing in a tiny, tucked-away cove we’d never heard of, the tide out far enough to reveal rock pools glinting like someone had scattered sequins. A handwritten sign nailed to a post warned of “slippery when cheerful,” which seemed about right. We spent the next hour poking about with a borrowed stick, discovering anemones the size of teacups and a perfectly rusted iron ring half-buried in the shingle that might once have moored a fishing boat. The only other people we saw were two locals walking their spaniel, who nodded as though finding strangers in their secret spot was perfectly normal. By the time we retraced our steps—using the church tower as a landmark—we were properly soaked and ridiculously pleased with ourselves. Back at Bradley House the little wood burner was already laid, so we lit it, made toast, and sat by the window watching the last ferry lights twinkle across the bay. It struck me, somewhere between the second cup of tea and the discovery that the sofa was far too comfortable, that getting properly lost had been the best part of the day. We’d set out expecting the usual beach walk and ended up somewhere we’d never have found on purpose, with sand in our shoes and the sort of quiet satisfaction that only comes from accidental discoveries. |
