About North Devon
The first thing that hit me was the quiet. After hours of traffic and the occasional outburst from the back seat about “are we there yet,” the only sound was the soft tick of the kitchen clock and the distant hush of waves on the beach below. Combe View sits just a short stroll from Ilfracombe’s little harbour, and even through the rain-spattered windows we could make out the curve of the bay. The owners had left the heating on low, bless them, so the place felt instantly welcoming rather than that usual chilly holiday-cottage shock. We kicked off our wet shoes by the door and padded through to the lounge, where a pair of well-loved sofas faced a big window that framed the sea like a living postcard. I dropped my bag, still chuckling at my soggy socks, and realised how tightly I’d been gripping the steering wheel for the last four hours. Something about that first proper lungful of salty air made the knots in my shoulders loosen without me even noticing. The kitchen was small but perfectly stocked for a weekend of simple meals—enough plates for four, a decent kettle, and a view of the garden that sloped gently toward the cliffs. We made tea in mismatched mugs and carried them out onto the little patio, rain now easing into a fine mist. From there the coastal path was visible, winding its way toward Hele Bay, and already I was picturing tomorrow’s walk with a pasty from one of the harbour cafés. What struck me most, though, was how quickly the journey stress melted away. One minute I’d been muttering about satnav conspiracies, the next I was standing barefoot on slightly damp decking, mug in hand, watching gulls wheel over the water. It wasn’t a grand arrival—no dramatic sunset or perfectly timed rainbow—just a damp doorstep, a warm cottage, and the sudden, grateful feeling that we’d landed somewhere that already felt like ours for the next few days. |
