Our trip to North Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to North Devon after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some classic Britpop, dreaming of cream teas and coastal walks. But no, about halfway through, my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and rerouted me down a single-track lane that was basically a mudslide waiting to happen. Rain was bucketing down, and there I was, white-knuckling the wheel as a tractor loomed out of the mist like a grumpy giant. I pulled over into a hedge—thankfully soft enough not to dent the car—and had a right old laugh at myself. "Welcome to rural Devon," I muttered, scraping mud off the tyres with a stick. Proper comedy of errors, but it only ramped up the anticipation. By the time I spotted the turning for Chittlehampton, I was buzzing—eager for that first glimpse of the cottage and a cuppa to steady the nerves.

Pulling up outside this cosy little detached cottage, I was chuffed to bits. Tucked away in a peaceful spot near Umberleigh, it looked just the ticket: quaint and welcoming, with that perfect holiday vibe that screams "relax now, worry later." The owners had left the lights on, and through the window, I could see a cheery glow from the wood burner—bliss after the downpour. I fumbled with the key safe (hands still muddy, naturally), and stepping inside was like a warm hug. The open-plan living space opened right up, all snug settees and a kitchen that had everything you'd need for a proper fry-up. First impressions? Spot on. I dumped my bags, kicked off my soggy boots, and cracked open a bottle of local cider from the welcome basket. Heaven.

That first evening, I barely moved. Curled up by the fire with a book, listening to the rain patter on the roof, I reflected on how I needed this more than I realised. Work had been manic, and I'd been running on fumes—always the planner, never the pauser. Here, in this little haven, it hit me: sometimes the best holidays start with a splodge of mud and a detour. No grand plans, just pottering about.

Next morning, the chaos felt like a distant memory. Sun peeked through, and I wandered a short stroll to the nearby woods—proper lush, with bluebells nodding in the breeze and birdsong everywhere. Picked up fresh eggs from a farm gate just down the lane, scrambled them up in the cottage kitchen, and munched by the window overlooking the garden. Later, a gentle amble along the River Yeo, spotting herons and maybe a kingfisher if I was lucky. It's that quiet magic of North Devon—nothing flashy, just rolling fields, hedge-lined paths, and the odd pub for a pint of bitter.

By the end of the stay, that arrival kerfuffle was the highlight, the story I'd retell with a chuckle. If you're after a proper unwind in a cracking little cottage, this corner of Devon delivers. Can't wait to go back—minus the tractor showdown, hopefully.
