Our trip to North Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
We'd been dreaming of this getaway for months, my partner and I, just the two of us with our two lively Labradors, escaping the daily grind for some proper North Devon downtime. The drive from Bristol started off smoothly enough, winding down the M5 and onto those twisty A-roads that hug the coast, but then came the classic holiday mishap: a sudden downpour turned the lanes into rivers, and we ended up with a soggy picnic blanket after pulling over to let a flock of sheep amble past. Laughing about it now, but at the time, I was muttering about checking the forecast next time!

As we crested the hill towards Combe Martin, the anticipation bubbled up – that first glimpse of the sea peeking through the hedgerows, the promise of salty air and no alarm clocks. Pulling into the drive of this gorgeous barn conversion, we were smitten straight away. It's the sort of place that wraps you in rural charm: spacious enough for a crowd but perfect for us lovebirds and the dogs, with five cosy bedrooms, a cracking hot tub tucked away for evening dips, and views stretching over endless rolling countryside. From the off, it felt like home – welcoming, unpretentious luxury that whispered "relax" from every corner.

We wasted no time settling in. First morning, we wandered down to the pretty village beach, just a short stroll away, where the dogs chased waves and we paddled in the rock pools, giggling like kids at the chilly Exmoor water. Combe Martin itself is a gem – that steep high street lined with tearooms and ice cream shops, where we grabbed cream teas slathered in clotted cream (jam first, naturally, or face the wrath of locals). Afternoons were for gentle rambles along the coastal path, spotting seals basking on the rocks below Hangman cliffs, the wind whipping our cheeks as we held hands and let the world slow down.

Evenings brought the best of cottage life chaos – cooking up a storm in the big kitchen with local Devon pasties and fresh crab from the harbour, only for the dogs to snaffle a sausage when we turned our backs. Cue mock stern voices and a lot of belly laughs. That hot tub under the stars was pure magic, bubbles fizzing as we sipped wine and watched the sunset paint the hills pink, talking about nothing and everything. One night, I caught myself staring out at the dark fields, realising how rare it is to just *be* – no screens, no schedules, just us reconnecting amid the simple pleasures.

Of course, there were those little self-reflective moments, like when I tripped over a wellie in the hallway, sprawling dramatically and declaring myself "allergic to holidays." But honestly, it was those tiny hiccups that made it real. North Devon has this way of stripping back the nonsense, reminding you what's important: good company, bracing walks, and a hot cuppa after. We left with fuller hearts and muddy paws, already plotting our return. If you're after a relaxed family-couple break – or just a dog-friendly bolt-hole – this corner of paradise delivers every time.
