Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
First impressions? Blimey, they hit like a Cornish pasty fresh from the oven – warm and spot on. The semi-detached lodge-style place was this cosy three-storey haven, just begging us to kick off our shoes and flop. Perfect for us two, though it sleeps eight easy, and the dog-friendliness sealed the deal with our scruffy lab bounding in like he owned the joint. It’s got everything on site for a proper luxe escape: a spa to melt away the drive’s tension, a swimming pool for lazy laps, a cracking restaurant and bar for evenings in, and an Aqua Park that’d have grandkids in hysterics if we’d brought any. But we were there for that simple couple’s rhythm – no schedules, just us. We woke to birdsong and the gentle chaos of cottage life. First morning, I fumbled breakfast in the well-kitted kitchen – burnt toast and all – while she snuck off for a spa session, emerging pink and grinning like she’d won the lottery. “Your turn,” she said, shoving me towards the pool. We splashed about like kids ourselves, then lounged by the water with coffees, watching families muck about in the Aqua Park. Pure bliss, that unhurried drift where time stretches. Venturing out was effortless – everything top-notch within a spit. A short hop to Padstow’s harbour, we wandered the quay, picking up fresh seafood from the boats, dodging seagulls with evil eyes. Grabbed cream teas at a bakery that smelled like heaven, then mooched to Trevone Bay, just a couple of miles off. The beach was ours on a quiet afternoon – toes in the sand, dog chasing waves, us sharing a picnic with pasties from Stein’s bakery. Back at the lodge, we’d fire up the bar for sundowners, or eat in at the restaurant, plates piled with local crab and chips. One evening, we even caught a live folk session there – proper Cornish vibe, feet tapping under the table. The walks were the real magic, though. Dog leads on, we pottered nearby trails, breathing that briny air, spotting buzzards overhead. It got me reflecting one dusky stroll: life’s mad rush back home feels miles away here. We’re not spring chickens, but these simple joys – her hand in mine, pup’s muddy paws, the lodge’s glow as we returned – remind you what matters. No grand adventures, just us, pottering through cottage chaos and coming out recharged. A week flew by in that bubble of relaxation. If you’re after a family-couple hybrid break with bells on, this spot’s a gem. We’re already plotting a return – satnav be damned. |
