Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Pulling up to our holiday house in Little Petherick felt like stumbling on buried treasure. This superb retreat, plonked in an idyllic rural spot just three miles from the North Cornwall coast, was spot-on for our rabble of family and mates – sleeps 11, room for the three daft dogs, with a hot tub bubbling away and even a tennis court for the inevitable sibling showdowns. Perched above a wooded creek off the River Camel, the views across the water were pure magic, all peaceful and green. First impressions? Blimey, we’d hit the jackpot. Padstow’s lively fishing port with its pubs and seafood haunts was only 3.5 miles off, and those golden beaches a quick hop, but honestly, we barely needed to leave. What turned the trip into legend, though, was how we kept getting gloriously lost – and unearthing hidden gems by accident. Day one, aiming for the coast, we veered off down a unmarked track near the creek and found this wildflower meadow where the dogs went bonkers chasing butterflies. Picnicked there with pasties from a no-signpost bakery we’d spotted en route – flaky, steaming, proper job. Next morning, a “shortcut” to Padstow’s harbour led us to a forgotten quay by the River Camel, where locals were netting crab pots. We chatted with an old fisherman who slipped us a couple of his catch; grilled them up back at the house that night, hot tub fizzing under the stars. Laughter echoed off the water – pure bliss. The real stars were those off-the-beaten-track finds. One rainy afternoon, dodging Padstow’s crowds, we pottered into the village and tripped over a tiny tearoom tucked behind the church – scones so light they floated, jam thicker than my accent after a pint. Another day, tennis abandoned after I whacked the ball into the creek (gentle self-reflection: maybe stick to hot-tubbing next time), we wandered footpaths and stumbled on a secluded beach cove, empty save for seals barking like they owned the place. No tourist traps, just us, the waves, and that salty tang you can’t bottle. Getting lost became our holiday mantra. It forced us off the map, into Cornwall’s quiet corners – the creek-side walks alive with bird song, a smuggling-era hidey-hole by the water we’d never have clocked otherwise. Sure, we dipped into Padstow for fish and chips at a harbourside spot, but those accidental detours? They’re the memories that stick. If you’re after a proper escape, bag a place like this and let the lanes lead you astray. You won’t regret it. |
