Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow – well, near enough, anyway. We’d piled into the car in the pouring rain from up country, sat-nav confidently directing us through those narrow Cornish lanes that twist like a tipsy snake. About halfway, disaster struck: a rogue pothole sent us careening into a hedge, one wheel spinning uselessly in the mud. Cue 20 minutes of me and the other half pushing while the kids giggled from the dry safety of the car. “Welcome to Cornwall,” I muttered, wiping muck off my jeans. But honestly, it set the perfect tone – a little chaos before the calm.

By the time we trundled up the final hill to our holiday spot near St Wenn, the sun was peeking out, turning the mid-Cornwall countryside into a patchwork of lush green fields. Perfect for special occasions or multi-generational gatherings, this luxurious retreat was a delight, full of thoughtful details and high-quality amenities. It consisted of two separate properties: a farmhouse for eight and an outbuilding, just yards away, that sleeps two, set in that tranquil spot yet only a few miles from beautiful beaches and family attractions. First impressions? Magic. The place just wrapped you up like a cosy jumper – that garden stretching out, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and not a soul in sight. I felt my shoulders drop the second we stepped through the gate.

We’d planned grand adventures – Padstow’s just down the road, with its pasty shops and harbour vibes, and places like the Eden Project or Camel Creek within easy reach. But honestly? We did bugger all, and it was bliss. Lazy cottage days became our religion. Mornings started with brekkie on the patio, me nursing a cuppa while the mist lifted off the valley. The kids claimed the outbuilding as their den, disappearing with books and snacks, emerging only for seconds helpings of whatever I’d rustled up. I spent hours in the garden, sprawled on a lounger with a dog-eared novel, listening to the buzz of bees and the distant low of cows. No schedules, no scrolling – just the joy of slowing right down.

One afternoon, I wandered the garden paths, picking blackberries that were practically begging to be scoffed. Sat there with a punnet, juice staining my fingers, and had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection. Life back home’s a whirlwind – deadlines, school runs, the lot. Here, time stretched out lazy as a cat in the sun. I caught myself grinning at nothing much, thinking how daft it is we don’t make more space for this. The other half joined me later, and we just chatted rubbish for hours, feet up, watching clouds do their thing.

Evenings were pure indulgence: firing up the barbecue (the farmhouse one’s a beast), then piling into the lounge with board games and telly. No rushing off to attractions – though we did pop to the beach at Harlyn Bay one day, toes in the sand for an hour before retreating. The real joy was the nothing: reading till my eyes ached, napping in the hammock, letting the world fade. By the end of the week, we were all properly recharged, reluctant to pack up. If you’re after a spot to switch off and savour the simple stuff, this is it. Can’t wait to go back and do even less.
