Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
First impressions? Bloody brilliant – or rather, absolutely smashing. The place had this perfect rustic charm, all tucked away yet just six miles from Padstow’s harbour buzz. We arrived with that fizzy anticipation, you know, the kind where you’ve been dreaming of shedding the daily grind, and stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm cardie. Autumn’s mellow light filtered through the windows, highlighting the snug living area where we dumped our bags and cracked open a bottle of local cider. The season shaped every minute, really. Mornings started crisp and misty, with dew clinging to the fields like fairy dust, urging us out for walks along the nearby trails. We’d spot pheasants darting through the undergrowth, their calls echoing in the cool air – proper autumn symphony. One day, we wandered over to Camel Creek, free entry a godsend for wallet-weary parents. The rides whizzed with fewer crowds than summer, the chill adding a thrill to the splashy ones, and the animals – goats munching fodder, pigs rooting about – seemed extra content in the golden light. Kids tore round the 40-odd attractions, faces flushed pink from the breeze, while I snuck a quiet moment watching the leaves swirl. It was one of those times you catch yourself thinking, ‘Blimey, when did they get so big?’ Padstow itself was a short hop away, and oh, the harbour in autumn! Fewer tourists meant we claimed a table at one of those indie seafood spots, scoffing fresh crab and chips as gulls wheeled overhead against a slate-grey sky. The shops overflowed with seasonal treats – pumpkin-spiced fudge, jars of blackberry jam from foraged hedges. We pottered through galleries, admiring moody coastal scenes that captured the rugged cliffs and hidden coves nearby, all edged with that fiery foliage. Evenings back at the cottage were pure hygge: wood-burner crackling (we’d stocked up on logs from a farm honesty box), board games under blankets, and stories of the day’s discoveries. The coastline felt alive in a quieter way – waves crashing on secluded beaches we had almost to ourselves, the air sharp with salt and falling leaves. Looking back, that little mishap on the road was a gift; it reminded me holidays aren’t about perfection, but those shared, season-soaked moments. Autumn wrapped our Padstow stay in magic – cooler days, cozier nights, and memories that still make me smile on grey winter ones. If you’re chasing that vibe, go now, before the frost bites. |
