Our trip to Padstow staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags, leashed up the three dogs (bless them, they were vibrating with joy), and headed out for a quick evening stroll around Trevibban’s trails. The vines stretched out like a green patchwork quilt, and the air smelled of sea salt and damp earth. Perfect for shaking off the drive. I was already buzzing about the coastal walks ahead – Padstow’s got some crackers, all rugged cliffs and hidden coves within easy reach. Next morning, the weather gods smiled: bright blue skies, not a cloud in sight. We tackled the Tregirls Beach path from nearby St Merryn – just four miles up the road, an absolute doddle to drive. It’s one of those satisfying hikes where the sand dunes give way to epic Atlantic views, and the dogs went mental chasing waves. We proper thrived on it, picnicking on pasties grabbed from a village pub en route. Felt like we’d earned every step, laughing as the littlest one declared himself “King of the Cliffs.” But this is Britain, innit? By day three, the forecast turned grim – lashing rain and a wind that could peel paint. Our planned long haul along the Camel Estuary got scrubbed; instead, we embraced the mush. Wellies on, we sloshed around Trevibban’s vineyard loops, dodging puddles the size of ponds. It was hilariously soggy – one dog vanished into a bush, emerging like a drowned otter, and I slipped arse-over-tit on a slick path, coating my jeans in mud. The kids thought it was the best thing ever, turning it into a game of “who can get the wettest.” Honestly, those rainy rambles beat sunny slogs sometimes; there’s something raw about Cornwall’s wild side when the weather’s got teeth. Reflecting on it now, sat back home with a cuppa, I reckon that’s the magic of places like Padstow. You pack for hikes, but the British weather keeps you on your toes – from sun-kissed strides to gleeful mud baths. It forced us to slow down, chat more, and appreciate the sheer bonkers beauty of it all. We walked miles, laughed loads, and came back knackered but buzzing. If you’re after a group holiday with dogs and proper adventures, this corner of Cornwall’s hard to beat. Can’t wait to go back. |
