About Padstow
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow – a proper Cornish adventure that started with me taking a wrong turn just past Bodmin, ending up on some narrow lane that had me white-knuckling the steering wheel as a tractor bore down on us like it owned the road. The kids in the back were chanting “Are we there yet?” for the umpteenth time, and my other half was pretending to nap while stifling giggles. But honestly, that little mishap just ramped up the anticipation – by the time we crested the hill and caught our first glimpse of the estuary sparkling under the sun, we were all buzzing with that holiday magic.

Pulling up to our sophisticated and contemporary apartment, right in the heart of Padstow’s coastal charm, it was love at first sight. Those sublime views across the estuary from the windows had us dropping our bags and just staring, mouths open. It’s the ultimate spot for a family like ours – modern inside with all the comforts, but perfectly placed to soak up everything that makes this corner of North Cornwall so irresistible. No frills needed; it felt like home straight away.

First morning, we wandered down to the harbour, the air thick with that salty sea tang mixed with fresh pasties from Stein’s bakery. Rick Stein’s influence is everywhere here, isn’t it? We grabbed a couple of sausage rolls and plonked ourselves on the harbour wall, watching fishing boats bob about while the kids chucked pebbles into the water, arguing over who could make the biggest splash. Pure bliss, that simple stuff – no grand plans, just letting the day unfold.

Afternoons were for pottering along the Camel Trail, hiring bikes from town and peddling lazily towards Rock, the estuary views stretching out forever. The chaos kicked in when our youngest decided halfway he was “too tired” and flopped dramatically on the grass – cue dad piggybacking him the rest of the way while I tried not to laugh too hard. We stopped at a little beach near Trebetherick for sandcastles that inevitably turned into a moat-filling frenzy, the tide sneaking up faster than we expected and soaking our trainers. Cottage life at its finest: sandy towels everywhere and that lovely exhaustion at day’s end.

Evenings back at the apartment were golden – firing up the barbecue on the balcony (weather permitting, fingers crossed for no Cornish mizzle), estuary sunsets painting the sky pink and orange. We’d crack open a bottle of local Doom Bar ale, the kids slurping hot chocolate, recounting the day’s daft moments over fish and chips from a takeaway down the road. One night, I caught myself just sitting there, glass in hand, thinking how these messy, joyful bits – the lost flip-flops, the over-sandy picnics – are what recharge the batteries more than any five-star spa ever could. In the rat race back home, we forget how good it feels to slow down like this.

Padstow’s got that effortless pull – dog-friendly beaches like Harlyn Bay a short hop away for morning walks, popping into the local pasty shop for elevenses, or just ambling the quay spotting seals. It’s all about those unhurried family moments amid the gentle chaos. We left with full bellies, rosy cheeks, and a promise to return. If you’re after a relaxed break that hits the spot, this is it.
