About Padstow
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a proper comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car at some ungodly hour, kids buzzing with excitement, me navigating via a phone that decided to lose signal just as we hit the twisty lanes of Cornwall. Then, disaster: a wrong turn onto a single-track road that had us face-to-face with a tractor trundling along like it owned the place. Hearts in mouths, we reversed for what felt like miles, scraping a hedge and picking up a passenger in the form of a very disgruntled blackberry bush. By the time we spotted the estuary glinting in the distance, we were all laughing – or was that hysteria?

Pulling up to our first-floor apartment, tucked away in a peaceful corner yet just a leisurely ten-minute stroll from the buzzing fishing harbour, I felt that rush of holiday anticipation finally kick in. We’d been dreaming of this spot for weeks, and there it was: stunning estuary views right from the off, with private outdoor spaces begging for evening sundowners. It’s the sort of place that welcomes up to eight with open arms, perfect for our ragtag crew of beach bums, food obsessives, and fresh-air fiends. First impressions? Bloody marvellous – sorry, I mean spot on. The moment we tumbled through the door, bags everywhere, the light flooded in, picking out the cosy nooks and that unbeatable Cornish charm.

We barely unpacked before spilling out to explore. That short wander to the harbour was pure magic – past little pastel cottages, the air thick with salt and chip-shop promise. Padstow’s harbour was alive: boats bobbing, fishermen hauling in the day’s catch, and the scent of fresh seafood wafting from Rick Stein’s empire. We grabbed pasties from a hole-in-the-wall spot – proper ones, flaky and stuffed with steak, not those sad imposters you get elsewhere. Sat on the harbour wall, munching away with gulls eyeing us jealously, it was like the arrival chaos had never happened.

Later, we hit Trevone Bay, just a quick hop away, for a paddle in the rock pools – kids shrieking with delight as they chased crabs, me pretending I wasn’t freezing my toes off. Back at the apartment, those estuary views turned golden at sunset; we cracked open a bottle of local rosé on the private terrace, watching the light dance on the water. Dinner was a lazy affair: crab claws from the harbour market, chucked together with bread and mayo. Simple, perfect.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the best start – a reminder that holidays aren’t about seamless perfection, but the joyful scrabble that follows. Padstow’s got that knack for wrapping you up in its rhythm, from the harbour hum to the beachside calm. We left knackered but grinning, already plotting a return. If you’re after quintessential Cornwall without the crowds, this is your spot.
