About Padstow
By the time we trundled into Padstow, the sun was peeking out like it knew we’d arrived. Our ground floor apartment – one of two smart, roomy ones in a cracking converted coastal house – sat in this absolute dream spot overlooking the Camel Estuary. I stepped out, bag in hand, and proper grinned. The water sparkled below, boats bobbing gently, and you could practically taste the sea. Golden beaches just a hop away, and the harbour down the hill calling us for pasties later. First impressions? Spot on. Spacious inside, comfy for our lot of eight, and that view from the lounge had us glued to the windows before we’d even unpacked. We were buzzing to hit the coastal paths straight off – Padstow’s got some belters, like the Camel Trail or the clifftop strolls towards Trevone Bay. Day one, weather was lush: blue skies, gentle breeze. We wandered down to the harbour, grabbed fish and chips from a takeaway (crispy batter, proper fresh), then ambled along the estuary path. The kids darted about spotting crabs, while I huffed up the hills, pretending I’m fitter than I am. That evening, we watched the sun dip over the water from the terrace – pure magic. Next morning, classic Cornwall: woke to grey skies and a drizzle that turned into a downpour. Plans for a long hike to Harlyn Bay? Scrubbed. Instead, we layered up in waterproofs and embraced the mizzle, trudging the shorter loop around the estuary. It was bracing, wind whipping our hoods, but oddly brilliant – puddles to splash in, seals popping up like nosy neighbours. Lunch was a soggy pasty picnic under a tree, laughing as rain lashed our faces. “This is character-building,” I told the moaning teens, channeling my inner dad. By afternoon, the weather flipped again – sun bursting through like it was apologising. We legged it up to the cliffs for a brisk yomp, waves crashing below, gorse buzzing with bees. My legs ached, but that fresh air buzz? Unbeatable. One quiet moment, sat on a bench gazing at the estuary, I had a proper think: rushing about life back home, we forget how good it feels to just walk, rain or shine, with family. No signals, no rush – just us and the coast. A couple more days of this lark: misty mornings forcing indoor board games (with estuary views as our backdrop), then clearing spells for triumphant treks to the beaches. Padstow’s paths are a dream for walkers – rugged, rewarding, and always a surprise with the weather. We left knackered but chuffed, already plotting a return. If you fancy proper coastal vibes without the faff, this spot’s a winner. |
