About Padstow
I’ll never forget the drive down to Padstow – or rather, the near-disaster that kicked off our holiday. We’d piled into the car in Bristol, kids buzzing with excitement about pasties and beaches, when halfway through Devon, the satnav decided to throw a wobbly. It rerouted us down some dodgy B-road that turned into a single-track lane, complete with hedges scraping the sides and a sheep staring us down like we’d gatecrashed its picnic. “This better not be Cornwall’s welcome committee,” I muttered, white-knuckling the wheel. But we emerged unscathed, hearts racing, and as the first glimpses of the north Cornish coast twinkled into view, that anticipation bubbled up – the promise of salty air, cream teas, and proper downtime.

Pulling into St Merryn village, we found our spacious first-floor apartment right in the heart of things, all inviting and perfect for our family crew. First impressions? Spot on. It felt like instant home, with everything we needed to flop into after that mad dash. Unpacked in ten minutes flat, and we were off exploring, stomachs rumbling.

That’s when the real magic kicked in – the locals. First up was Madge behind the counter at the village shop, a wiry septuagenarian with a perm that defied gravity and stories for days. “You lot from upcountry?” she eyed us suspiciously, weighing our pasties. I nodded, confessing our satnav saga. She cackled, “That’s nowt! Last week, a posh lot from London got stuck behind old Farmer Trev’s tractor – he waved ‘em through with a pitchfork, grinning like a Cheshire cat.” Her tales of Trev’s legendary slow-mo processions had us in stitches, and she slipped extra sausage rolls into our bag “for the journey back to civilisation.” Cheeky, but we loved it.

Next day, strolling to Harlyn Bay – just a hop away – we bumped into Pete the surfer lad at the beach café. Mid-twenties, dreads tied back, nursing a pint of milk (odd choice, but who are we to judge?). “Waves been mental today,” he drawled, spotting our kids building epic sandcastles. “Fancy a go on me board? Free lesson for newbies.” Turned out Pete’s family had fished these waters for generations, and he regaled us with yarns about dodging seals and the time his nan out-paddled a pod of dolphins. My other half tried the board, predictably wiped out, and Pete’s howl of laughter echoed across the sand. “You’ll get it next time, mate – or stick to pasties!”

Evenings brought more characters. At the pub quiz in St Merryn, we teamed up with grizzled ex-fisherman Bert, who claimed he’d once arm-wrestled a pirate (or was it a porpoise?). “What’s the capital of Cornwall?” the quizmaster barked. Bert winked, “Padstow, obviously!” We didn’t win, but his dodgy history facts and pint-buying prowess made it the highlight. One quiet moment, supping a cider as the sun dipped, I caught myself reflecting: in the rush of daily life back home, we forget how these quirky chats – the warmth, the wind-up – recharge the soul. No influencers or algorithms, just proper human connection.

By week’s end, we’d swapped numbers with half the village, promising return visits. Padstow area’s got it all, but it’s the people who make it unforgettable. Can’t wait to go back – satnav permitting.
