About Padstow
We'd been buzzing with excitement for weeks about our family getaway to Padstow, but the drive down from Bristol turned into a proper comedy of errors. Picture this: me at the wheel, kids in the back squabbling over crisps, the dog shedding fur like confetti, and then – bang – a rogue seagull dive-bombs the windscreen just past Bodmin, leaving us all shrieking and wiping guano off the glass. "Welcome to Cornwall," I muttered, laughing it off as we finally rolled into Padstow, the salty sea air hitting us like a promise of better things.

Pulling up, our hearts lifted straight away. There it was, this charming traditional fisherman's cottage right in the thick of it, just moments from the harbour. Spot on for us lot – three cosy bedrooms for the family, dog-friendly so our mutt could join the fun, private parking a quick five-minute stroll away (handy with all the gear), and a sunny enclosed courtyard that screamed lazy mornings with coffee. First impressions? Bloody brilliant – it felt like stepping into a hug from an old mate, all character and no pretence.

We dumped the bags and headed straight out, the harbour calling like a siren. Padstow's alive with that buzzy fishing village vibe: boats bobbing, gulls wheeling overhead, and the smell of fresh crab wafting from the stalls. We grabbed fish and chips from a harbourside spot, scoffing them on the quay while watching the world go by – kids' faces smeared with ketchup, dog eyeing scraps hopefully. Pure bliss, that simple pleasure of doing nowt but soaking it in.

Next morning, courtyard brekkie turned chaotic in the best way. Toast everywhere, the dog nicking sausages, me burning the bacon while trying to juggle everyone's demands. Cottage life, eh? It's all part of the charm – that gentle mayhem that makes you forget the daily grind. We wandered the shops after, picking up pasties from the bakery (Stein’s influence everywhere, but we kept it local), then ambled along the harbour path, skimmed stones into the water, and let the littluns burn off steam chasing each other.

Afternoons were for low-key adventures: a potter to the beach at Trevone, just a short walk away, building lopsided sandcastles and paddling in the shallows till our toes went numb. Evenings? Back to the cottage for pasta thrown together in the compact kitchen, board games that descended into giggles and mild cheating accusations, then collapsing in front of a film with the harbour lights twinkling outside. One night, as the kids conked out early, I sat in the courtyard with a GandT, listening to the distant clink of glasses from nearby pubs. Made me reflect a bit – we're always rushing about, aren't we? But here, in this unassuming spot, it was a reminder that the best holidays are the ones where you do bugger all, just be together amid the joyful disorder.

Padstow worked its magic on us. No grand plans, just family, sea air, and a bit of cottage chaos. We'll be back – seagull attacks permitting.
