About Padstow
I finally made it to Padstow after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. The sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Bodmin, sending me on a detour through some tiny lanes that were more suited to a pony and trap than my little hatchback. I ended up with a few extra grey hairs and a scratched wing mirror from brushing a hedge, but honestly, as the salty sea air started wafting in through the window, all was forgiven. Padstow was just around the corner, and I could already picture kicking back in my holiday spot.

Pulling up, my heart did a little flip – there it was, this charming first-floor apartment tucked away in the heart of things, all cosy and inviting with that romantic vibe perfect for a solo getaway. I grabbed my bag, the dog’s lead, and bounded up the stairs, anticipation buzzing. Stepping into the bright open-plan living space felt like a warm hug: the kitchen with its cheery red tiles was kitted out for knocking up a simple supper, a wee dining table set for two (even though it was just me and the pup), and a comfy sofa begging me to flop down. First impressions? Spot on. Close enough to pop out for a pasty or pint, yet private for doing precisely nowt.

That first afternoon, I unpacked minimally – swimsuit? Nah. Walking boots? Forgot 'em. This trip was all about switching off, and this place was made for it. We headed straight to the little garden area outside, where the dog sniffed every blade of grass like it was treasure, and I cracked open a book I'd been meaning to read for months. The sun filtered through, warming my face, and I just sat there, sipping tea from a mug I'd found in the cupboard, listening to the distant call of gulls. No agenda, no rush. Bliss.

The days blurred into this glorious rhythm of laziness. Mornings started late with coffee brewed in that brilliant kitchen, maybe a slice of toast scoffed at the table while gazing out towards the river. Then it was garden time again – stretching out on a lounger (or the grass, if I'm honest), lost in pages of some daft novel about Cornish smugglers. The dog would chase shadows or nap beside me, and I'd wander down the short stroll to the beach for a paddle in the shallows, toes in the sand, before ambling back for lunch. Afternoons? More reading, perhaps a cheeky nap on the sofa, stuffed from a lazy lunch of cheese and crackers. Evenings were pure indulgence: sunset views from the window, a bowl of pasta whipped up without fuss, then curling up with a cuppa and whatever was on the telly.

One evening, as the light faded over the estuary, I caught myself smiling at how still everything felt. Back home, life's a whirlwind of deadlines and to-do lists – here, I realised I'd been running on fumes without knowing it. This apartment gave me permission to slow right down, to savour the quiet joys like the rustle of pages or the dog's contented sighs. No grand adventures, just perfect, unhurried days that recharged my soul. If you're after a proper break, this is the spot. I left feeling lighter, already plotting a return.
