About Padstow
We'd been buzzing about our family trip to Padstow for weeks, the kids counting down the days like it was Christmas. Me and the wife, Sarah, piled into the car with our scruffy labrador, Monty, and the boot stuffed with enough snacks to feed a small army. The drive from up country was a dream at first—rolling Devon lanes giving way to those twisty Cornish roads—but then disaster struck just outside the village. A rogue seagull dive-bombed our windscreen, splattering it with what looked like a full English breakfast. We pulled over in hysterics, me wiping it off with a pack of baby wipes while the kids chanted "bird poo apocalypse!" Typical us, turning a minor mishap into a story we'd retell for years.

By the time we trundled into Padstow, hearts were light again. Spotting the public car park right nearby was a godsend—no faffing about with narrow streets. A quick lug of cases up two flights of stairs (note to self: pack lighter next time), and we stepped into this cracking pet-friendly second-floor flat bang in the heart of the seaside village. First impressions? Bloody brilliant. Sea views peeking through the windows like a postcard come to life, and that open-plan living space just screamed "relax". The sofa and armchair were claimed in seconds—the kids bagged the sofa for cartoon marathons, while I flopped into the chair with a cuppa, feet up, Monty snoring at my side.

It was pure family holiday bliss from there. Mornings kicked off with brekkie in the well-kitted kitchen—nothing fancy, just bacon sarnies and fresh bread from the local bakery down the road. We'd wander out to the harbour, watching the fishing boats unload their catch, then amble along the coastal path for that bracing sea air. Padstow's got this magic, doesn't it? Rick Stein's chippy for lunch (fish and chips with mushy peas—don't knock it till you try it), or a pasty from the independents that taste like they've been made with love and a bit of fairy dust. The kids splashed about on the beach at Trevone Bay, just a short stroll away, building wonky sandcastles while Monty chased waves like a daft puppy.

Afternoons were for simple pleasures: a potter around the harbour walls, ice creams from the van that dripped faster than the kids could lick, and lazy evenings back at the flat. I'd rustle up a pasta bake in the kitchen—everything you need is there, from pots to that essential cafetière for my morning fix—while Sarah flicked on the telly for some rubbish quiz show we all shouted at. There was chaos, mind: Monty stealing a sausage mid-dinner, the youngest spilling juice on the rug (sorry, cleaners!), and me burning the toast because I got distracted by the sunset view. But that's cottage life, innit? The joyful mess of it all.

Looking back over a quiet pint at the local pub, I had one of those gentle moments—realising how these unpolished days recharge the batteries. No grand plans, just us, the sea, and a bit of Cornish magic. Padstow and this little flat nailed it. Can't wait to go back.
